Prepping for Minnesota

I'm getting my stuff together for Minneapolis, and I'm getting excited! Although I need to fly - and I hate to fly - I'm so excited about finally making it to the mini-apple!

I worked through a few deadline projects yesterday - hooray - and I'm feeling pretty fabulous! I also visited the doc and was told that apparently the meds I'm on for COPD can cause increased chance of infection (a little counter productive, no?) so that's what I've been fighting through for the past weeks - my body trying to get infected and my brain saying, "NO WAY!"

The body won.

So back onto antibiotics plus a course of steroids so I'm in tip top shape for my next round of teaching. And, for good measure, my doc thinks that I should start taking Allegra D, but I'm thinking twice about that (so many drugs, so little time...)

My neighbor is moving at the end of the month, and we're rather sad. She has two adorable boys who play with Max and Hannah, but the good news is that she's only going 3 blocks away (to her dream house - which is currently in the nightmare stage for her - pre-moving angst) and our kids will be going to summer camp together, so we'll see lots of each other. I actually haven't seen as much of my friends locally lately due to my intense travel schedule and more intense calendar work when I HAVE been home - I'm hoping that as the days lengthen I'll get more done (ha!) and have more time to hang with some friends in the neighborhood.

We have a pretty stellar block - very nice folks, trees, shade - just lovely. I know that one day I'll move from South Orange, but it will be a very sad day for me! Every time I travel and return home Gerry says, "So, should we move to _______?" - he's in escape mode. He wants to escape from the high property taxes in NJ in general, and South Orange specifically (we pay more in taxes than in mortgage) and I think he just wants to escape from NY a bit, too. Me, I'd be happy just about anywhere - and I'm fortunate to have work that I can do just about anywhere! I must say that Buffalo was pretty appealing...

Resolution
I've received a lot of emails asking about resolution, as well as a few comments, so here it is. You can draw whatever conclusions you like from this - but for my money a picture (of a check) is worth 1,000 words.

Funny
And, with thanks to Rachel Maddow, here's something that made me snort my tea this morning because I was laughing so hard when I heard it on Air America!

Oh, my. That picture IS worth a thousand words. I can't believe she has the audacity to behave this way AND claim that she's been victimized.

I could go on all day. (shakes head) (sigh)

It still sounds fishy to me, but at least you've been paid. I'm confused about the $260, though... $180 + $60 is $240.

I caught your episode of Knitty Gritty on the other day. You inspired me to stop wishing to make cables and just knit the damn things. You made it look easy... and it is! :)

Wow...that's amazing...I wish my Kinko's could make my stuff in the future and send it back to me in the past when it's needed... ;-)

I'm glad you finally got paid something, but those deductions are ridiculous (especially that strangely dated receipt!).

That's really hilarious that she deducted "expenses", but at least she paid you. I trust this check did clear? She's really a piece of work. I don't even know if I would take a check from her, but rather a money order or cashier's check. Plus do you get to be reimbursed for the stop-payment she put on the first check? I'm just evil like that!! ;-)

My bad - the travel expenses were $80 - I wrote that wrong!

Ok, this is just horrid--she charged you for the yarn during the class and for the copies? When I teach at my LYS they supply me with the yarn and the copies--they do not charge me for it. Not only that, I get to take the yarn with me.

Ridiculous that she charged you!!

Well, at least you got most of it. I'm not surprised at her dishonesty with the kinko's receipt given her behavior so far. I do know that I won't ever go to her shop. what an unethical (insert really rude word here)!

A picture is worth a thousand words, indeed. The funny thing about all this is the fact that it cost about $30 to stop payment on the check, so she didn't really come out that much ahead. Just what was the whole point of this?

Good riddence!!! Holy cow. That is amazing. Just remember, people like that make the rest of us look REALLY good, even on our worst days.

I'm appalled at this "resolution." It's as though you're completely stupid and cannot see the date on the Kinko's receipt! At the same time, you've got your money, and that's better than not having it ;). And, as someone said, good riddance! May we never have to speak of this disaster again :).

I'm so glad that's over! At least you got paid in the end. Deducting $30 is the nitpickiest thing she could have done given everything else . . .

Hi, Annie...Julie from Rochester here again...although I haven't dealt with anything as tough as COPD, I have had some annoying sinus/allergy issues, and acupuncture has changed my life! Just wanted to mention it if you haven't considered it already...and yes, come to Buffalo! It's only an hour away from Rochester! :-)

Yes, yes, I second the come to Buffalo- as you knew I would. And for all the rest of you reading this- we really have a terrific city here. And my parents, down in NYC, got more snow than us this year (again) if you can imagine. (Really, I don't work for the local visitors center) And you can't imagine the number of yarn shops in close proximity. And art galleries. And theaters. And the food, do I even need to go on about the food?!
Annie- glad you got paid something, hope this helps you release the demons. Seems like you are getting your mojo back after dealing with all that bs. You are a star!

wonder what would happen if you rented an empty shop near her shop, just for one day, gave lessons, charged those attending directly and and and,well...anyway;
i just want to add that you are underpaid for all you do in your teaching.

Sorry you had such a bad experience with this woman. Her actions are ridiculous. Thank the gods you'll never deal with her again.

Hope your trip to MN goes much smoother!

I wish I could attend one of your Minneapolis classes - but it is not to be. I called when Yarnzilla still had plenty of seats for their May 1st classes but since I only could take one class I had to go on a waiting list since the shop owner was only registering people that could take all 3 classes. She must have succeeded filling them since I never got a call back telling me there were any 'left over seats' for people who only wanted to take one class. Bummer.
Anyway I hope you love Minneapolis - it's a great time of year to visit.

Have a great time in Minneapolis! Despite the fact that I've been away for 5 years, in my heart I still live in the Twin Cities- it's a fantastic place!

One of my friends from graduate school has a saying that I find very useful in dealing with people:

"It doesn't TAKE all kinds, there just ARE all kinds."

I think this woman falls under that rubric.

And I agree with dragon knitter - I think the "expenses" were "cooked" so that they covered the cost of her stop-payment. But, whatever. (My feeling personally is that it would be worth $30 to me to never have to deal with that person again.)

I imagine this would really be more trouble than it's worth at this point, but that receipt seems to me like it would be evidence of fraud on her part. Isn't fraud a crime? I want to see this woman get what she deserves!

Hey Michelle,

I think she has gotten what she deserves, which is probably at least as much irritation as she's caused me. Instant Karma, baby!

I am no angel, and screw up at least as much as the next person - but the goal of life isn't to be mistake-free but to deal with the mistakes gracefully, which also means dealing with other's mistakes gracefully. Or at least as gracefully as we can

Who knows if I've done this, I've certainly read arguments on both sides (I've been called everything but a child of god over this thing) but I don't think I would have handled it significantly differently.

My blog is a window on my deisgn life - I think it's unusual in that (I'm not aware of other blogs by folks who earn their living exclusively through their knitting, designing and teaching, but I may just be unaware of them.) This was a significant experience in that life, and to not write about it would have been a kind of self-censorship (not self-editing, which I DO every day!) that I'd prefer not to engage in.

Thanks so much for your kind comments and good thoughts. I admire your grit!

Annie - thanks for the update on that little controversy. I have been wondering what happened. I figured out which shop it was, and I will never never shop there, ever. Not a very pleasant way to do business.

Hope to meet you someday! And, please wear whatever you want...........

everyone knows that she can deduct her business expenses - so i hope she does not try to deduct this on her taxes that is cheating.
