Campfires & Red Carpets

Last night after just hanging out around the lake rental, driving up to St. Cloud for some lunch and then back home for another killer game of Sorry!, the kids and Gerry and I started a little fire in the pit down by the lake - bunching up newspapers and laying out the logs. It was a good fire, if a little smoky (which was actually wonderful as it kept the mosquitoes away - I don't think I was bit once!)

Every now and then I'd run back up to the house to check and see if they'd gotten to the category I was waiting to see - Best Actor in a Miniseries. Finally there was Helen Mirren (looking remarkable!) and Hugh Laurie announcing the nominees.

I was bummed that they weren't showing the nominees sitting in the audience (as they usually do) but instead projected a little montage of them in their nominated roles. That meant that Andre would HAVE to win if there was a chance of showing Ami in the dress. Fingers and toes crossed - the envelope...

"Andre Braugher for 'Theif!'"

I was SO excited!

Not only is he a great guy - just a really wonderful person and a heck of a dad - but Andre's an absolutely amazing actor. YAY!! And, of course, his series has been cancelled, like so many of the award winners - what is UP with that?

My happiness turned to pillow-throwing, all-out yelling GLEE when he thanked his wife, Ami, and the camera showed her (oh, all too briefly!) wearing the RED DRESS!

In all honesty, I didn't know if she'd be wearing the dress. She'd picked out a stunning brown gown, very simple, and I thought she might go with that. I was SO jazzed that she chose my dress. She wrote to me a few days before the award, "It's so simple and sexy. The length is perfect. It's lightweight and has that retro/classy look about it. I can't wait to show Andre. He's gonna love it."

That's the absolute best thing I could have read!

I'm so happy for both of them - and, of course, I'm happy for me, too. Even better, after all of my screaming and happy shouting, the kids came up, we hugged, then we all went back down to the lake and toasted marshmallows and ate smores until bedtime. And that is exactly the best thing in the world to do after you've seen a dress you've designed (and knitted) at an awards show on national TV.

I may work up the pattern and sell it - it's a nice shape and very flattering - I have to see what Ami feels would be the right thing to do (in a way, it's HER dress...)

And, the icing on the cake? Ami's a knitter - she loves knitting, she's good at it (she learned by knitting socks in Maryland during Homicide) and that's how we became friends, as knitting buddies. All good things through yarn. I'm telling you, the stars were in alignment on this one! And, yes, I did knit the dress in absolute record time, and my fingers still have the blisters to prove it.

At any rate, I would absolutely LOVE that tape, Sorka - thank you SO much for going to the effort of taping it!!

Scrip Update
Target to the rescue!! My Dr. phoned the scrip into Target today, we stopped by on our way to the State Fair (much, much about the amazing time we had there today) and picked up the albuterol. It was so easy, and everyone was SO nice. (I hate when folks characterize the NYC area as full of rude folks, but it is true that I do get tired of the underlying nastiness quotient that you have to deal with on a daily basis over stupid little things - like picking up prescriptions - when folks make you feel like you've ruined their day with any request, no matter how small.)

Folks here are just so - darned - NICE! I am loving it. And my kids don't seem odd when they say, "Please" and "Thank you" - at least they don't get the comments, "What nice children!" that they do back home, everyone here seems to say it. That's nice, too.

And we found on-street parking for the State Fair 1 1/2 blocks from the main gate. Could life be better?

Tomorrow - Our Day At The Great Minnesota Get-Together
I won a stuffed dog at Whack a Mole - or should that be Whack A Gopher?

Congratulations! I've been surfing and googling for a photo, but no luck. I loved Andre Braugher in 'Homicide', I don't get HBO so I can't comment on 'Thief'.

I wish I managed to put two and two together. I love Andre Braugher -- in my 20s, I stayed home on Friday nights to watch Homicide (in the pre-Tivo aeon), and, my association, I love Ami Brabson. I can't believe I didn't keep my eye out for your dress last night...
Well, congratulations, Annie!

I was so bummed not to see your dress on Ami- the one and only time I got up to make a cup of tea and I must have missed it. This morning I poured over the red carpet photos in hope of seeing it there- not luck. So glad that you got to see it albeit briefly. That must be the best feeling ever! Congratulations- it is a truly beautiful dress.

Yay, congrats! I didn't see the show, now I'm a little disappointed that I didn't... I'd love to see that dress on an actual person! I hope you do write up the pattern. Maybe, if you feel like putting in the extra effort, with a option to make it shorter or the full-length. I'd buy it either way.

I'm so happy for you, and for your friends! Although I was watching the show only out of the corner of my eye, I absolutely did NOT miss your dress! There it was! Stunning!

I never watch awards shows, but I watched last night just to keep an eye out for your dress, but I didn't catch the shot. I scrutinized every red dress on the red carpet and in the show to see whether it was knit or fabric.
I'm glad you posted a picture of Ami in it--looking great.
If you have a chance, listen to old tapes of the Prairie Home Companion to get a complete description of Minnesotans. They are wonderful!!

Congratulations!!! How exciting! I'm so happy for you. Please do put out the pattern - it certainly fills a void; I haven't seen anything similar. I wonder if stretching is an issue, though? Either overall from the length, or across the bum from sitting? Whatever - it is a really cool dress, very elegant. Congratulations again!

I still haven't watched the emmy show yet, but now I really have a reason to watch it (I still have last year's show that I haven't finished watching on tape). What a beautiful dress!

I thought the dress looked lovely on the mannequin, but it was really beautiful on an actual woman.

You should be proud.

Congrats! That is WAY COOL! I remember that shot, now, but I had NO idea about the dress. I wish I'd known, I would have freaked out! (just found this blog today thanks to Pixie) Maybe you'll start a trend! Now I have to go look at your books again.

The Great Minnesota Get-Together! Corndogus Eternis! Woo hoo! We lived on Snelling and Larpenteur, so we couldn't help but be aware of the State Fair!

My husband is from St. Cloud- we went to college at St. Ben's and St. John's University (just north of St. Cloud on 94- it's a beautiful place to walk around, if you're looking for more activities- there are hiking trails around the lake out to the Stella Maris Chapel- where my husband proposed) so you're in one of my favorite places! I can't tell you how many subs at Bo Diddley's I consumed during my college days.

Ahh. Homesickness.

Oh, and congratulations on the dress, which really is the bigger deal here. It looks fantastic. I'm so glad it got air time!!! Pardon me and my Minnesota freak-out.

Welcome to Minnesota.

If you are interested in a house with green space try looking in Maplewood. The yards there tend to bigger. It is a NE suburb of St. Paul.

Perhaps I'll see you at one of the spiffy yarn shops some day. My personal favorites are Sheepy Yarn Shoppe in White Bear Lake and Borealis Yarns in St. Paul.

Hi Annie- St. Paul knitters have noticed that youÕre looking in our backyard for a home. (We didnÕt realize MN meant OUR townÉ :) Since youÕre in the neighborhood, two long standing Wednesday night groups of avid knitters are merging just this week in St. Paul on, of course, Wednesday night. Most of us havenÕt had the pleasure of meeting you, although IÕve heard Louise was a tour guide of sorts during Yarnover last April. If youÕre interested to come and knit with us, or just want to hear about neighborhoods (etc.), send an email and IÕll respond with our meet-up location and time. schl0389 at umn.edu

Congratulations Annie! What a high that is! I wanted to comment about the lake - you could get inner tubes and let the children float around on those - the algae shouldn't hurt them unless the lake has jiggers (itchy stuff) check with the neighbors on that one. Also, you can fish at the end of the dock without a license. Have a great time. Thanks again for fitting me into your schedule for the class. Bonny

I have to correct Bonny - a fishing line is a fishing line, no matter where you drop it in. You do need a license, even off the end of your dock! I don't want to be a lunch lady, I just want to save you a hefty fine. I checked the DNR regs just to make sure I wasn't nuts! They are pretty easy to pick up online however - just google the Minnesota DNR.
