Here We Go Again

Last night my thumb was feeling irritated - just a little sensitive around the base of the nail. Last night several times I woke up with a bit of pain when I'd knock it against the headboard. This morning it's just beginning to swell the tiniest bit. I will NOT have this happen again - I will NIP this in the bud this time!

Two years ago I got a manicure in California and it turned into a year-long thumb injury/infection. I'm not sure what happened this time - certainly not a manicure - but my thumb has come into contact with something that's making it beginning to swell, so I am going to get myself fixed RIGHT AWAY and not let it go. Right now it's soaking in hot water and hydrogen peroxide, and I'm already taking some antibiotics for the sore throat thing (saw the doctor yesterday... hey - maybe that's where the thumb met it's current foe?) and she prescribed some antibiotics to clear up my ear, nose and throat infection before I get on a plane this Friday.

Of course, the timing is exquisite. I'm leaving on Friday for Tulsa to teach at Loops (I heard today that all classes are filled, woohoo!) and then Monday I fly from Tulsa to LA for Knitty Gritty. If I can't get this under control, I'll be wearing a LOT of hand makeup. After that I'll be at The Knitters Studio and Unwind in the LA & Burbank, respectively, for some more classes and some booksignings (and a wire demo!)

Then I return home for a wire workshop at the Westchester Knitting Guild, and to resume Watch 2006 until December 15th, when we can go ahead with plans to fly to MN to look at the finalist homes. Exciting, but nerve-wracking, too!

Opus
I've started on what I think will be an amazing piece. I don't have a sketch, I'm just sort of feeling my way, but I have a very good feeling about it. I'm making what will be a felted mitered jacket (my hope is it will feel like a nice, warm boiled wool jacket) Unlike almost all of my designs, I'm actually making this one to fit ME - in a larger woman size - because I'm just being greedy. Since the felting will reduce the size of the garment by approx 20% (according to my swatch) this means knitting a VERY big garment. I'm prepared, when folks ask me in airports and at the kid's school, to tell them that it's a blanket. To say that it's a jacket for me would be just too embarrassing.

I'd post photos, but it looks like nothing now.

I'm also starting on a project for VK - a new knitted seat for a Shaker rocker that we picked up at an auction last year. It's a sweet little seat-less chair, so I'm knitting one up and creating an unusual project for VK at the same time!

I am having the same thumb issue. It started yesterday and last night was bad. I went to the gym (unusual enough) and could not hold the handles of the eliptical machine. I too soaked and am now slathered in Neosporin. As with you, no manicures for months. What can it be? I am waiting until 9:30 to call the doctor.

On another note, I love your blog and your work. I tried to get into both of your workshops at Loop in Philly and they were all sold out. I actually live in Baltimore. I hope that your move west won't preclude your teaching at a place a I can get to.

Good luck with the thumb!

Annie,
Keep up those warm soaks. Use water as hot as you can take without burning yourself. The peroxide won't help unless there is an actual area to clean up.Good luck.

Hope the thumb heals soon. Also the cold. Take care dear girl, but by the sounds of your schedule you are not letting any moss grow under your feet!

i get thumb things. i've had two recently. my mom got one when i was a kid and had it for years it seemed, but then got rid of it all of a sudden with some magical tincture and it was a miracle. when i grew up and before she left the planet i said mom? what was that magical liquid thing in the brown bottle that fixed your finger that time, just in case i ever need it and she said "Desenex." of course, by the time i did need it, they didn't make it in that form anymore, but i discovered that the same thing, even the same brown bottle (they musta bought'em out) put out by sally hansen as a nail fungus cure. it's just 100% something or other liquid, in a little brown bottle with a brush in the cap, and you just paint it on and if you have a fungus it will take care of it in a few days; if you don't, it will do nothing. last time i used it in conjunction with neosporin, not knowing if it ws a fungus or an infection. it worked, one of them. try it.

Hi Annie, As an experienced hair artist, I can attest that hair will go into the skin easier than a splinter, and we all know that wool is animal hair.

I would suggest a bright lite and magnifying glass used to take a good look at the offended area. Also ask someone for a second look just to be sure.

Good luck with it! Still hoping to see you in
Houston someday...

Instead of the hydrogen peroxide, use Epsom salts in hot water, and soak 2-3 times per day. If you do see any breaks in the skin, use Neosporin or Bactroban (prescription needed) & cover it with a band-aid.

Annie--just wanted to say that Twist and Loop arrived today and it is the most beautiful book filled with utterly tempting projects; I may just have to dump everything else I am working on this weekend and dig out all the wire and beads! Thanks for a great, great addition to the wire knit/crochet library (like, you and Arline Fisch are about it). Now get that thumb looked at!!
