Fourteen Years
Fourteen years today. The traditional gift for a 14th anniversary is ivory or an elephant related gift. I got Gerry a refurbished ipod. It's black, but it has white earbuds (almost ivory?)
He's been listening to it all morning - Confessions of an Economic Hitman - during his 5-hour stem cell harvesting session today. I can tell it's wearing him out, but so far he's not suffering the side effects they've mentioned; tingly fingers or nose, nausea.
I'm going to see if it's okay if he has a little champagne.
Our nurse today, Ken, turned Gerry onto Duckman - here they are watching it on youtube.
Couple of nuts.
RAINCHESTER
Today we're supposed to get another 3 inches here in Rochester.
It feels like it's happening on another planet, we're so engrossed in Gerry's own drama.
This is either a car ahead of us, or two VERY angry Mooses.
VICTORY GARDEN
I really love vegetables as landscaping.
I remember about 20 years ago when I first saw cabbages used in front of hotels in Philadelphia for decoration. And I really loved the uncle in the movie, Withnail & I, who wore radishes on his lapel like a boutonniere.
So ladies and knitters, I bring you the Minnesota version of yard beautification, Veg-scaping.
Extra Musical Note:
As we were leaving the Gonda building, the music of choice today was "Seasons in the Sun" Seriously.
I walked all the way to the car and had the walker and our various bags half packed up before I realized what I was humming. Now we're back home and Gerry's been asleep for a few hours, he'll sleep all night and tomorrow at 8:00 we're back to the aphasis machine!

Annie - delurking to say Happy Anniversary and I am sending you and Gerry healing thoughts as you go through this journey together. My brother-in-law went through a stem cell transplant a year ago for AML (leukemia) and his odds of survival without this were 20%. Thankfully, all went very well and now he is doing beautifully. Hopefully Gerry will have similar results.
Another reason to delurk is to warn you that salmon is NOT lowfat. It is healthy fat, but not lowfat. Please check with the folks at the Mayo Clinic before you pick up dinner!
Warm regards and thanks for sharing this personal journey with us. Your courage and dignity is an inspiration to all of us.
Leslie
Happy Anniversary you two! I'm keeping y'all in my thoughts as you go through this journey together.
I wish you many many years more together.
Happy Anniversary. What a thoughtful gift for Gerry. Maybe you could download the oldie 'Baby Elephant Walk' to his new IPod to stay in the 14th year theme of things. As far as I know champagne is low fat!
Your photo of that river in flood stage is interesting. Here's a mini-history lesson. In 1978 Rochester had about five days of heavy rain and the rivers/creeks that run through Rochester overflowed causing serious flooding. People still talk about the flood of '78. It caused Rochester to spend many dollars on a flood control project. I'm so thankful they did because if it weren't for that flood control project anyone trying to get anywhere in Rochester would need a boat right now.
My Mom lives in Rochester in a one-level patio home but the heating/A/C duct work is underground. Her duct work started to fill with water Saturday night. My husband and I spent Sunday installing a sump pump. (it took one trip to Home Depot and three trips to Lowe's but we did it)
Best 'harvesting' wishes for Gerry.
An anniversary to remember...yes, yes... Good present for Gerry! It looks like you have a super nurse! Stay safe. Hugs.
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!!!
I've been thinking of you both there in "Rainchester" and wondering how much rain you're actually getting. Stay dry and enjoy your dinner tonight. I hope Gerry isn't too worn out by the harvesting today. Best wishes to both of you!
happy anniversary and i've been thinking of you (more) with the rain... best to both of you!
Hey Leslie,
I misspoke. I didn't mean low fat as much as heart healthy. They just don't want him eating a lot of saturated or hydrogenated fat tonight because it can REALLY show up in his blood!
I live in Philadelphia, and I have been in love with the cabbages as decoration since I first visited here. Usually, they get pretty mank when the snow hits hard, but last year, we had virtually no snow, so they skipped the slimey, shredded, dirty stage. It was nice.
Happy anniversary and many good thoughts to you both!
Happy anniversary to both of you! And here's to many many more :) I hope Gerry got to have just a sip of champagne, but just being together is a pretty great way to celebrate. I'm sending healthy-type congratulatory thoughts your way!
Happy Anniversary, Gerry and Annie! Glad you didn't get stranded in the rainstorm!
Judy
Happy anniversary, and all my best wishes and hopes for many more happy and healthy years together!
Happy Anniversary, Annie and Gerry.
Our best wishes to both of you for a very long and healthy time together.
Happy anniversary! It will be one of the memorable ones I'm sure. You sound great....I feel like I know you both.
I'm thinking of you both as you go through this.
Happy Anniversary!
Hi Annie--
That Mayo playlist is a riot! What did they do, look up the Dewey Decimal category for "Death and Dying?" I haven't thought about "Seasons in the Sun" in years. Don't be surprised if you here Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey, I Miss You" next. I'm so glad you see the humor in the musical selections.
Happy Anniversary to you and Gerry. So glad the harvest has begun well.
Cheers,
Sharon

luna lovegood wore radish earrings. now that's the ultimate veggie "landscaping."
So I guess a very Happy Anniversary wish is in order! Sounds as if you are actually having a decent one, in your current circumstances...and if he can't have the champagne, more for you! (or should you just have a couple beers... no headache...)
I like the cabbages and veggie-scaping myself. Hoping for a
Happy Harvest for Gerry!
Happy Anniversary, Annie and Gerry!
I'm curious, Annie. If Gerry has the cancer, how can they use his own bone marrow? Doesn't it have cancer cells? Or do they have a way to 'clean' the cells?
Hope your day and evening were great! So glad you were together!
Praying for many more years together for you!
Happy anniversary Annie & Gerry! May you be blessed by the anniversary fairy a thousandfold!
Hugs from Chagrin Falls, Ohio
Happy Anniversary and may you have at least 40 more together! Next year you and Gerry will remember this year's anniversary at the Mayo and smile, knowing it was all worth while.
Sending you both wishes for good harvesting, good results and good health.
Very, very happy anniversary! Much love sent both your way!
Formerly the Cheesyknitwit, now just Kay :)
Wishing you both a very happy anniversary with many many more to come.
Annie & Gerry-
May you look back on this anniversary one day and say "ha! we were still newlyweds!" Wishing you many more!
Amy
