Feels like it's raining all over the world...
And it's raining.
Perhaps it's because I spent the flight editing blog posts - several of which I've put together as part of my lecture tonight - but I'm feeling sad. And I can't get the Blogger photos to work (I'll post them later...)
I have NO reason to be sad, really! I'm staying in an amazingly cool bed & breakfast (it's an old elementary school!) and I scammed a PT Cruiser at the car rental place. But I'm blue. Just a very slight violet blue.
I have more trepidation about teaching in Portland than I've had when I've taught at other places. Don't get me wrong - I'm PSYCHED to be here - and I get a LOT of email from Oregon. I can't wait to see Stevanie's shop, an Darcy's shop, and I've already been contacted about an interview for a local blogger.
But it's such untried territory for me - I have no Portland experience.
My big fear? I'll show up tonight and there will be 6 people, including yarn shop staff, who are there to hear me speak. My recurring nightmare is not that I'll speak in front of folks in my underwear. MY NIGHTMARE is that when I'm up there IN my underwear, there won't be anyone in the audience. Figure THAT out, Mr. Freud...
I've had this nagging, haunting, sense that this will happen - a sense of doom (Doom, DOOOOOOM!) that is NOT justified in any way. But this is what haunts the minds of folks who talk to groups of people.
And - totally unknown to me, because I'm so non-plugged in that I could be a hand-crank ice cream maker - Stephanie Pearl McPhee was here LAST NIGHT. Yikes. Way to sweep up after the circus, Annie...
I've gone to hear Steph and she's REMARKABLE. Oy. Me, I'm an acquired taste. And I have the feeling the Knitters in this area are probably still digesting their banquet from last night.
If there's ONE knitter in this area who has the desire to come out and hear me on this rainy day after seeing the YARN HARLOT last night, I'll give them five bucks. No I won't. But I'd like to.
Now I'm reduced to papering the house. Ni-ice.

I really really want to hope in a car and drive down. If I leave right now I would make it in time for your talk, but I am a tad busy. Now tomorrow I will be in Portland. Oh well. Have a great stay in our lovely little town.
Wow. How did you customize the part under "Leave your comment"? I'm going to have to figure that out. :)
At any rate, I was just gonna say that often the first act warms up the house for the second act. I think Stephanie just got 'em ready for you. Break a leg, knock 'em dead, GO GO GO! and all that.
(And I understand there's some great microbrew in Portland.)
It's 5:09 Portland time as I type this. You're going to knock 'em dead, Annie! Stephanie warmed them up for you and you're going to teach them. She's a raconteur, you're a teacher. Teachers entertain while teaching. I have nothing against Stephanie (going to see her myself Sunday in Northampton MA) but would rather be seeing you :)
Burn Baby Burn! (to quote "somebody")
I used to live in Portland (went to college there) and its filled with wonderful people who have (I'm sure) been waiting to take a class with you. I gather you are staying at the Kennedy School (such a cool place!). McMenamins pubs have great beer. Also good food. Check out the gift shop (the t-shirt selection is awesome!)
You'll do great Annie. I hope I have a chance to hear you speak or take a class from you one day.
Like Leslie said "Burn Baby Burn"!!!
The Yarn Harlot is very funny, and I would love to see her speak. But I've met you, and if I had to choose? I'd go with you every time. Because you? I can LEARN from.
Well, Franklin Habit had 130+ show up for his 1000 Knitters photo shoot the day after Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, so I'm sure you'll have a crowd! I certainly would love a two-fer of knitting! Awesome!
Welcome to my home state! It will stop raining around mid-june, and will start again mid-september. Oregon is definitely not for the seasonal-depression-prone! However, we make up for our bad weather with strong, independent opinions- you should feel right at home!
If I didn't need to stay with my hubby tonight(he had a surgical procedure today), I would be there listening right now. As it is though, I will get to spend Friday night and Sunday morning with you!! YEAH!
Relax... the Pacific Northwest is pretty laid-back. You WILL get the audience that you deserve! If I get the time, I'll drive from Eastern Washington to come see you. Portland is beautiful and I'm sure you'll want to come back.
Best wishes.

Hey Barb,
I appreciate the sentiments, and thanks for the good wishes - but Steph's a good friend! I can't let anything on my blog cause her any possible pain.
Thanks, though, for writing - it's really good of you!
I loved your talk tonight! Wednesday night is the night that some of my Mama-pals and I get together sans-kids and knit, and I'm so out of the loop insofar as what "knitting celebrities" are in town.
What a pleasant surprise that while none of my friends showed up, you were there speaking! I was immensely inspired by your whole talk... I don't even know what to say except that you gave me a new way to think about death. Your comments about my knitting (I'm the continental knitter who wraps my yarn... different) sent me home glowing! I know everyone there was thrilled to have you in town, and your off-beat sense of humor was right at home.
ok, I had to borrow from Gypsy here: You'll be swell, you'll be great
Gotta have the whole world on a plate
Starting here, starting now
Honey, everything's coming up roses!
Clear the decks, clear the tracks,
You got nothing to do but relax
Blow a kiss, take a bow
Honey, everything's coming up roses!
But truthfully, as always, you'll be FABULOUS!!!
See? Poor poor Annie.
Works for every post.
