With Feeling...

ABUNDANT YARN ROCKS!!!

And I am LOVING Portland - what a fabulous place!

It is by far one of the COOLEST yarn shops I've been in!

The space is large and light and beautiful, the selection is so wide, it's like walking through a rainbow! I could hardly keep my hands of the yarn, and one of their proprietary colorways [I forget the name, something to do with Tin Man] had me at "warm golds & browns"

Aside from having such an amazing shop, Heather is a gracious and fun person - I flatter myself that in another life we could be cousins (we share a shoe size!) - and Stevanie is a BLAST! Even more fun was her most excellent, goofy, AWEsome son, who reminded me of Hannah so much I could have cried. Duuude.

My fears were senseless - thank you ALL for the moral support! - because there was a healthy showing. Not quite the 400 folks that the Harlot had (but Harlots know for being busier than Heretics, right?)

Wait until you sees the turnout for my burning, baby! Now THAT will rock the house...

It was my first time giving the lecture I gave last night, and I'm afraid I was more rambly than I would have liked. But the group was graciously forgiving and allowed me to stumble through a few parts to get to the "Aunt Wanda joke." Yay!

I need to hone the lecture - it's Knit with Courage, Life with Hope, and it's based on the experiences of this past year along with some knitting stuff and draws a LOT on the blog entries. Evidently the talk was good because I did get a few more signups for my classes, I think most of them are filled (or filling up, I could be wrong - check with the shops...)

Detention
Yes, I am staying at the Kennedy B&B - I didn't mean to be coy about it before - and I'm posting from my MOST comfortable bed in a room that used to be a classroom. There's something fun, and slightly disquieting about that.

Blogger's being WACKY with my photos, so if you want to see the most AMAZING dinner in the world you can visit my flickr page

The Kennedy school looks a LOT like Max's current school, the layout is similar and they seem to have be from the same era. Dinner last night was EXCEPTIONAL (tater tots!) and I'm going to go for a dip in the soaking pool this morning before breakfast.

The soaking pool opens in 15 minutes and guess who brought a bathing suit! I cannot WAIT to see what fun stuff they have for breakfast here - and my class isn't until 10:30! Could life be more heavenly?

Okay, there's no TV in the room (I'm such a lowbrow) but I streamed Frontline last night for the background noise that I need to relax

I drowned my sorrows in a Rogue Hazlenut Brown Nectar - life is good! Thank you Heather for this MAGNIFICENT beer. And, yes, the guy on the bottle DOES look a little like Gerry.

Annie, I enjoyed your lecture and I'm looking forward to taking classes from you today and tomorrow.

Your accomodations sound so much more heavenly then mine.

Hi Annie!

We stayed at the Kennedy School when I was attending at art workshop...about 4 years ago! The place is fantastic! I loved our little "cloakroom" for our clothes and the blackboard in the room. They have movie nights in the auditorium, since there aren't any TVs in the rooms. There's a fabulous market up the block...kind of a Whole Foods clone. Enjoy your stay!

Abundant Yarn was the one place we didn't make it to on our Portland Yarn Crawl in February (too far from the train station to walk) - now you make me want to go so bad! Oh well, #2 son has a baseball tournament in Portland this summer - Whoo-Hoo. Time to make a side trip!

I'm jealous! Since I live in Portland, I've never stayed at the Kennedy School. I'd love to do that sometime. I do love to visit the various McMenamin's pubs and theaters, though. (Your tater tot picture makes me want to go get some!)

I'm sorry I missed your talk at Abundant last night. I seriously considered it, but the week has been crazy so I had to skip it. (I didn't get to see the Harlot either.) I hope you come back again so I have another chance at it! :)

You are smart, talented, and so creative with knitting [and other aspects of your life] that I stand in awe. Everyone has days when we question ourselves ... just don't have too many of those dark hours.
Maybe it is your age fighting with your self-worth and many gifts. I found that to be the case in my 40's ... when peri-menopause [which lasted a loooonggg time] gave way to actual menopause [which also lasted a longggggg time] that I don't think as yet has given way to calm and serene years.
Please - when you feel the darkness descending - take a warm bath, whip up a new pattern, hug your family - and the darkness will quickly abate
Enjoy Portland

Glad your fears were unfounded. And I'm so glad you like our tasty beer. (I don't work for Rogue, but I feel like it belongs to the people of Oregon. And if you can ever make it out to Newport for one of their warehouse sales, I recommend it. Great deals and enough free samples to make you giddy.)

I'm so sorry to have missed the talk last night-I had a ticket, but a bad cold kept me home. I ws so looking forward to it. I hope you enjoy our lovely city and all make you feel welcome. The weather is supposed to get nicer, then you'll see our city in all its splendor. My knitting group meets frequently at Abundant Yarn and I agree that the employees are great from Heather and Stevanie on down. Have fun.

Annie,
I want you to know that I elected to not go see the Harlot. I wanted to stay home and watch the Pa. election returns.
I chose to go see you instead, and I am glad I did.
Thank you for the the inspiring talk and informative class.

Annie,

I really enjoyed your class last night, and especially the side stories! They kept me from having boggy brain from information overload. I did find myself straying from the pattern to try to keep up with your witty remarks, but I also have retained so much more of the class information than I have in other classes where it was all lecture and no fun.

Also, I have to thank you for your views on knitting for yourself and not getting swept up in what is right and what is wrong. When you were talking about how we sometimes will say "I hate you" when admiring the work someone else has done and how negative it is, but we believe it is positive, I had to look inside myself and admit that I do that, and I only have the best intentions when I say it...but it must change. It was always meant to be a silly compliment, but I see now that it would be much better if I just told them what I thought outright. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

I've always admired you as a designer and knitter, but now I admire you as a person as well. I really loved how you kept jokes going between my Mother and I, we both enjoyed it so much. I think we learned some things about each other last night as well...all thanks to you.

Funny how much I learned that had nothing to do with yarn!

Thank you so much, and I hope to get to take another class with you sometime.

So this is a little funny, my boss was staying at kennedy school and had a soak in the pool too! She said you gave her advice on how to get my labor started...a beer and burrito. I'm excited to try both. I had a very small beer sunday night and I felt like things might get started, obviously I was just missing the burrito! Glad you liked portland!

Annie, My dad and aunt attended Kennedy School way back when it first opened. If you recall seeing a picture of a bunch of boys dressed like figs (they were supposed to be pixies), he was the one in the middle. My aunt appears in another picture of girls costumed as flowers.

McMinniman's does a wonderful job of preserving the Northwest's past. They have a historian on staff who gathers and preserves the stories behind the wonderful places they refurbish as inns and restaurants.

Can't wait for your return in September. I'll be making the trip down from Seattle.

Cheers!
