Turnabout is Fair Play
It's been a while since Han's been on the blog, and Max has had MAXimum coverage what with all the kayaking and skiing and baseball.
So here's a shot of Hannah in a wimple type of scarf that I just finished in Buffalo Gold's #13, Buffalo & Bamboo yarn. She looks thrilled to be modeling for mom in August, huh?
Actually, it's absolutely lovely here. My doc (I saw her today because of my breathing) says it's been SO humid here, but compared to NJ or Ohio, it's a balmy breeze.
I'm slightly worried about breathing in NJ, but I have prednisone and - although I had the 'puffing' effects it has on my body - it has a beautiful way of allowing me to breath again.
The wimple is a one-skein, 250yd laceweight project, and as soon as I have the pattern written up I'll distribute it in some way (I'm thinking this may be my next "free only through a yarn shop" patterns - I've heard the Ruffled Roses Scarf has been really successful for yarn shops across North America)
We're packing up, which for me means trying to get my projects to a finished state, or an easily transportable state. And trying to figure out ways to make the car comfortable for 4 folks, a dog and some books or games.
Gerry's not big on driving these days, and I don't blame him. Aside from sitting pain (when he's a passenger he can move around and lay back if he wants) he has an awkward tendency to fall asleep (so bad when driving) and he thinks the pain meds makes him loopier than he'd like to be.
But, as he DEFINITELY needs the meds, and we'd ALL like to have a peaceful end, I'll be doing the lion's share of the driving.
But I love that, you all know that...
This means less knitting, but more thinking time. I've forewarned the kids that mom may have one earphone from her ipod plugged in during the trip, and when you see this, don't bother mom.
We're probably going to be listening to a LOT of Harry Potter, though - always fun - and we might even sing. Do families still sing in the car? All of those 'cooler than thou' movies in the 80's and 90's when they parodied singing car trips might have made it a rather gauche thing to do, but we're all lefties.
BTW - anyone have any recent experience with St. Marie Among the Hurons? We went when I was a kid and I was NUTS about it, but I don't know if it would be right for the kids at 11 & 10...?

My DH has excellent results on his kindergarten route singing along with the kids....behavior improves instantaneously!
Totally beautiful wimple (and model!!).
And can I tell you how much I like dark humor? (And chocolate!) You made me laugh with this one. Have a great trip!
Have a good trip! Singing is a MUST in my families book. Although our kids are little so they want to sing "Little Einstein" songs or "They Might Be Giants: Here Come the 123's". Which are good the first time not so much on time 100.
Ooohhhh... Harry Potter! We love listening to that!
Don't know if you followed the recent thread on Ravelry where your wonderful free LYS rose scarf pattern had been sold by a LYS.... It's been quite the discussion.
I adore that wimple and I'd cross a busy highway on roller skates to get my paws on that one!!!
Have a great vacation. Our family tradition was to play 'punch buggy' Which means slug your siblings before they slug you every time you see a VW bug... Ah those were the bruising days...
The wimple is gorgeous.
I could get my daughters singing if we were playing shared music - the Beatles worked especially well. We'd sing along.
Same here, the wimple is to die for!!!! Keep us updated. Have a fun road trip. Living in Ashevegas home o' the subaru we play subaru smack instead of punchbuggy. Its fun too!
I love that scarf! Do you think you could find a way to make it available to those of us in the UK? Pretty please with sugar on top?
I sing in the car with my kids. Actually 'singing' might be overstating it.....

Hi Annie,
We are huge book on tape fans. As a family we've done a ton of driving this summer, hence heard MANY books on tape. A particular favorite was Week in the Woods. Your kids are exactly the right age for it. Last Summer's hit was The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall. A new classic.
What a great memory you just brought to mind. When we drove to our cabin in the deep PA woods my dad used to always sing, horribly off-key, while we were driving. "On Top of Old Smokey" and "Take Me Out to the Ball Game", were particular favorites. Sheesh. I'm getting tears in my eyes, and I'm here at work.
Sing away. It will be a wonderful memory someday for Max and Hannah.
Ste-Marie among the Hurons was very interesting and I think for the kids it would be excellent. You might take the time to go north to Penetanguishene (sp) where you can go out to see an old ship I think. It's only about another hour north. And on the way, there is another Huron village as well. These are slightly vague comments but I was there about 5 yrs ago.

We *always* sang in the car on trips. Our favorite was (believe it or not)... the entire soundtrack to Jesus Christ Superstar. Yes, from the opening guitar thumping chords to the very end. (Except we didn't do the lashes or the wierd dying sound effects)
I thought my Mom was going to comment last night... she remembers us singing John Jacob Jingleheimmer Schmidt. And I remember Sammacammakootchakammatoasanearatoasanovasammakammawhacky Brown (you know, the kid who fell in the well but his name was so long before anyone could rescue him he drowned)
Hmmm... maybe *we're* the reason all those 80's movies parodied singing in the car...
BTW... I remeber you had an entry about wanting Hannah to be proud of being strong and not overly reliant on looks (I'm paraphrasing here)but... she's gorgeous! Wow! Your daughter is absolutely stunning in that photo.
Strong and beautiful.. she's going to be fine.
