The Traditional Thanksgiving Snake

Maybe it was the cut ends of the Brussels Sprouts? Or the gallons of potato & apple peels? Maybe it was the celery ends? Whatever it was, our disposal is clogged. It runs, it creates a whirlpool, but the water ain't going NOwhere.

Various fixes were tried, including Gerry's foray with his snake (he looks for any chance to bring that baby out...) but so far to no avail.

Our friend, Mike, who's visiting for the week thinks he's wandered onto a fix online, but it involves a pot of hot water and none of us are totally understanding it (we started drinking early) so right now Mike's printing it out so we can all read it together at the sink.

(added Friday morning: Here is the magic link, in case anyone else has the same problem...)

Dinner's almost ready, the turkey breast is almost done, the potatoes are waiting to be whipped and everything else is settling and warming. Gerry just finished the dressing (we cook it separate from the turkey) and we have The Godfather series on TV. Gerry remembers back in the day, in NYC, when King Kong and Mighty Joe Young were on the TV menu every Thanksgiving.

I think they show the Godfather in this holiday season so that the families at home look relatively happy and normal in comparison.

Tomorrow we're having some friends over for a Day-after-T-day dessert and coffee thing. I bought wine and beer (not terribly helpful, but fun.) We're feeling rather low-key, and very happy to be able to see some of our friends. I hope I have enough pie!

I've been pretty rotten at keeping up my blog the past few weeks, I apologize for that. I've been so, well, blue and sad over things. Everytime I start to write, I feel as if I'm just going to be all sad and blue, and I don't want to take anyone else on that trip. I ride alone.

But every day is nicer, makes more sense, and is a little easier.

Today it was SO lovely that I went out for a good, long bike ride while the turkey finished and Gerry romances the sink. Happy days!

I came home to two cats in love (Shiloh is very thankful we brought a babe home for him, Kiki seems pretty thankful, too!)

Gerry just announced that, "Following the Insinkerator instructions [drumroll] we got it fixed!"

Thank you, insinkerator, this will be the BEST Thanksgiving EVERY!

3 Hours Later
The dinner was grand, the kitchen is cleaned, the garbage disposal is chugging away and we're just giving ourselves a few hours to digest before we stumble toward that bright light we call "Dessert" Yee haw!

So we'll sit, we'll stuff, and then we'll have either Apple or Squash pie (I made both) and rest. We may have a game of Monopoly or Scrabble later, who knows?

I think we'll all watch Spirited Away. I could tell that Mike is impressed with the video knowledge our kids have - lots of unusual movies and TV shows, we're odd parents.

Gerry used the instructions to fix the insinkerator? Could you send him in my husband's direction and have Gerry show him how to use those pesky pieces of paper with all those words and diagrams that come with appliances and the like? (John (my hubby) says using instructions is just like cheating and he is NOT a cheater.) That being said, I promise beer, wine, lots of good food in return for showing him the way. Happy Thanksgiving Annie to you and your family.

When I think of the traditional Thanksgiving Snake, it's more of that lying around after dinner like a boa constrictor trying to digest its meal...

Happy Thanksgiving!

Your disposal story reminds me of a Christmas a few years back. I put 4 -5 pounds worth of potato peels into my disposal and experienced the same clogged drain. Luckily my dinner guests that evening included my brother, the plumber. He eventually cleared the drain and explained to me that potatoes are one of the worst things to put down your disposal. Something about the starch..... So I got a very expensive drain clog cleared for free, all for the price of a dinner that I was serving anyway!

Best wishes to you and your family at this time of the year. Among the many things that I am thankful for this year is the wonderful online community of fiber artists who share their thoughts, knowledge, and inspiring words with the rest of us; yourself included.

Our disposal is cloggd, too! (I think it was the butternut squash peels...) but we have no directions for fixing this baby, as it came with the house... so, tomorrow we call the plumber and stay home to wait for him, thus missing the yarn sale at the local shop. Fortunately, there is plenty of yarn here already, and many other things to be thankful for. Thanks for sharing, Annie!

Another caution:KALE. When put down the disposal, the green leafy bits went down and in the pipes under the sink was a huge tangle of what looked like fishing line. It was catching everything else. Haven't done that again!

MMmmm.The dessert day sounds good.

I once said that I read Instructions and one of my friends said, 'Oh but people from Edinburgh always read the Instructions.' It was probably the first time that I realized that some people don't.

I'm glad you had a lovely day and don't worry at all about not blogging; it just makes it more of a treat when you do.

Annie -- don't worry about not blogging -- but also don't worry that you are taking us on a sad and blue ride. One thing I found through grief support groups is that "joy shared is doubled, sorrow shared is halved"

We all love you and would happily lend you our shoulders, strength and support as you ride that lonely and blue ride. Know that we are there if you stumble to help you back up.

I am grateful this year for many things among them your blog. Your sharing, your family's strength, your stories -- all have helped me through this year.

Thank you

Yep - almost certainly the potato peels. We had exactly the same thing happen several years ago. I make Irish Potato Dressing & always have at least 5 lb of potatoes to peel. I usually do the peel-over-old-newspapers method as taught by my mother 50+ years ago but decided that, since we had recently gotten a new disposer, I'd just chuck 'em down there. Massive gluey clog - took many. many repeats of pouring drain cleaner down it before we could use either kitchen sink. So now I'm back to using the old newspapers!

Ah, but good parents too.

Happy Thanksgiving Annie - and Rachel (above, not me) is right - if you want to blog about it, don't be afraid to share the ride when you're sad. It's ok and if any of us can help by understanding how you feel or at least sympathizing even if we don't know what it's like, well I'm sure we'd all be glad to.

Also a caution on celery in the disposal: the strings can wind around vital bits and get caught.

Really, disposals are wonderful, but they're a bit finicky!

There is a way to run potato peels down the disposal without jamming it. You do it very slowly, only a few peels at a time. I start out that way, get tired of it, and scoop the remaining peels into the plastic bag the spuds came in. Then I stuff the celery veins and onion and garlic skins and all the rest into the same bag and dump it all in the compostable recycle bin, except for the bag, which goes in the regular recycle bin.

I discovered what potato peels do if handled otherwise many years ago. Fortunately, my house was built with convenient clean-out access and I've never had to call a plumber to fix this.

Did you mean "Spirited Away"? That is such a great (although decidedly weird) movie. We are waiting until our kids are old enough to watch it without bad dreams (they are 3 & 5). I'm so glad you had a good Thanksgiving!
