A Brief Break

I'd been cranking out ideas (well, writing them down here at home - putting them out on my blog bit by bit) pretty furiously for the past few weeks, feeling that at some point I'd have to slow down.

The slowdown was me falling 3 times on my shoulder at the Hyland Ski & Snowboard area. OUCH!

I didn't break anything, nothing permanent, just banged up a bit. Sore. It's been hard to sleep for the past 2 days so I've been resting all day, sleeping when I can, and that means not a lot of designing or writing is going on.

I'm not knitting right now because my shoulder's just painful enough that the repetition is annoying. I'd rather let it get a good rest in. But I did do the Wii today - hula hoop and advanced step - and, I'm ashamed to admit it - the Wii skiing. It's a good way to work up a glow without going to the effort of getting dressed when I feel like poopy.

So I'll be back in a day or so with more updates on History on Two Needles, and also on new info on teaching dates and other fun stuff. In the mean time I'm going to try to sleep a bit, and I'm going to cash in a gift certificate for a massage to further the healing process.

I'm supposed to have skiing lesson #2 on Sunday and I'm hoping to feel both well and BRAVE enough to continue. Gerry did amazingly well at his lesson - we had an instructor who works with handicapped folks and he was very good with us, going very slowly. My big problem is I can't seem to stop (yeah, that's problematic - ) but Gerry did well with all aspects.

We don't honestly think that either of us will make it off the bunny hill - Gerry's scared and I'm just too slow - but even getting ON the skiis, going up a little mini-lift and coming down a bunny hill is the fulfillment of a dream for both of us. Silly how much a small thing like that means.

Without meaning to we've come up with a new slogan for this segment of our lives: Life; if you're not going to live it, why bother?

I really love your slogan. I'm inspired! I have been having a hard time lately doing what I want to do and not letting fear get in the way, and I think you and Gerry have the right idea.

I hope the rest of the week is restful and healing for you. Congrats and good luck to both of you on the skiing! There's something so uniquely satisfying/empowering about physical achievements.

I admire you skiing -- I'm afraid of falling/going fast LOL

But take care of your shoulder -- it is amazing "how much" you do with it, and when it doesn't work properly -- ouch!! Keep it warm, and a great product to try and get is a non-BenGay item -- Arnica cream/gel by Boiron (unfortunately, not always easy to find, sigh)

I remember my first time on skis. SO much fun. So freeing. Flying down the hill, wondering if I would stop or if I'd break a leg. I love your slogan. Rest and enjoy your week.

Good for you and Gerry! I am down to snowshoeing, love my LLB winter walkers.

Am loving your in-depth designing series. Fascinating. We all work in different ways to get there. Shelagh, Vermont Designs by Shelagh.

Such memories! I learned to ski at Hyland Hills in grade school, back in the early 90s. Back then I think they only let snowboarders on the hills during the weekends because they were "no good" or something. If you do make it down the bunny hill by the end of your lessons, try Buck Hill (if it still called that, of course -- haven't been there since '95). They have/had a few different green diamonds that are only slightly more difficult than the bunnies, and one (used to, at least) end right at the little chalet with a bar upstairs.

When I was learning to ski, my dad made me take tylenol before I even got the boots on, then dosed me every few hours. Yay painkillers!

Stopping is harder than skiing - you can always try to sit which will slow you down. Of course getting up again isn't too easy. I started skiing around age 35 - 25 years later still at it, but have gone back to the green trails. Deb

Veteran skier and instructor here with some info conveyed in a manner perhaps too delicate for your instructor...when doing the snowplow (or pizza or wedge) to stop, it is key that your center of gravity (think your hoohoo) be a little lower and more forward than is normally comfie. This shifts both the position and strength of the quads offering a little more control. Hope it helps and you don't get discouraged.

I love the wii hula hoop and wii ski jumping!! I think its so much fun. It's awesome that you and Gerry have been able to share this experience. Rest up and feel better. I think the slogan would be a great bumper sticker, t-shirt, coffee mug, you name it, its a great slogan.

try sitting with a pillow under the elbow of the bum arm - it helps me if I do that - broke my shoulder in 3 places a few years ago and broke my arm above the elbow in November - so I speak from experience ;)

Bravo you and Gerry for getting on the cold white stuff. I love your books and always keep an eye on where you are. The 'History' is intense and I'm really enjoying all your research links. Take good care of your shoulder!

Since I trip over carpet patterns, I have only admiration for those intrepid souls who attempt to ski. You go girl! Let not the moguls (or knitting Moguls) get you down.
On another note, thank you for sharing your thoughts as you create HoTN. I find it fascinating to see the creative process in action. Cordially, Jane

don't give up on the skiing - my 80 year old mil (sort of) just took up skiing with her granddaughter this year (she has had 2 lessons so far) and is loving it (and she has an artificial knee too)
