Had Pod-ya*
"One little pod, just one little pod..." So my worrying wasn't misplaced.Apparently the POD can't get to our backyard. So instead of having two PODS on our driveway, and loading them at the same time, we'll have just one. We'll load it up, then send it off on Monday morning and have POD2 delivered Monday afternoon. I was a little stymied at first by this change in plans, but it is what it is.
It means, though, that there was some intense loading today. I outdid myself by lugging almost all of the boxes I'd packed to date, plus two small bookcases and THREE large bookcases, into POD1. They fit perfectly against the walls between the supports, and we can anchor them so there's no shifting. I was a veritable loading machine (what-cha do, do, do, do, do, loading machee-heen!)
I called Gerry and told him to bring home a hand truck (which he did - we're so proud of our new hand truck!) and also told him he'd better NOTICE the work. He did. And the hand truck he bought was blue. So armed with my hand truck ($48 at Costco - it can be used in 2 ways for long items or tall items) I loaded a buttload more boxes.
And I am bushed. My real estate agent gave me the name of some movers she uses, I called them and they're coming over tomorrow to load up even MORE stuff into POD1, and do some packing, too. Once we get this baby locked and loaded, they'll roll it out and bring in the next one.
We'll have more time to load that one - I'll be in Chicago for most of that time - and it hits the road on Feb 8.
Then we will experience The Return Of The Dumpster.
Yes, in a limited return engagement, direct from Mauriello Bros Waste Management and playing to packed houses across New Jersey, the DUMPSTER will be back on Irving Avenue again. Seating is limited.
The hardest part today? Packing my yarn and [gulp] a few cases of finished garments onto the pod. Scary. I told the kids they had to put the stuff they couldn't live without for a few weeks in a box in their closet, so that the movers can load much of the rest of their stuff. Moving in stages.
And - even with the excitement today - I took time to have the MOST AMAZING THAI LUNCH that I've ever had. I wonder what the Thai restaurants are like in St. Paul?
We had intended to rent a trailer from UHaul. It sounds so innocuous, huh? Rent a trailer? Nothing could be easier, right? Well, somehow Gerry and I both made it to late-40-hood without realizing that you can't rent a trailer if you DON'T HAVE A TRAILER HITCH! Getting the hitch seems that it will be about as expensive as renting the trailer.
We're rethinking. We may be sending a whole lot more in the second Pod than originally intended...

hi annie,
i don't know what the thai places are like in st. paul, but there are some very good ones in minneapolis. and actually, i think i've heard of a good one in st. paul on grand ave. ... i promise, you will not go hungry!
--beth (in minneapolis, who's excited you're moving here!)
There are two Thai restaurants on Grand Ave - one over by Macalester and one down the other way towards downtown St. Paul. There's also one on Selby, not too far from Nina's. There are Thai places on University Ave too, but I tend to go to the Vietnamese restaurants in that area, for Pho. There are two in downtown St. Paul that I like. My favorite Thai restaurant is way down in the southern suburbs, though, in Savage.
You also need to make sure how much weight your car is capable of pulling. Another thing is the fact that there will be snow in the direction you are traveling. I am not much older but have done this a couple of times. GOOD LUCK> cecilia
There are lots of choices for Thai in St Paul, never fear!
You need a trailer hitch, AND a vehicle that will accomodate it. Consult your car's owners manual. Look in the index for "towing capacity." If it is not listed, DON'T DO IT! If you drive an SUV, it has some sort of towing capacity (that will vary widely), but regular passenger cars usually have little or no towing capacity. And if by chance you drive a hybrid......forget it.
Just a FYI. A million years ago I owned a good sized Mercury. Hauled a trailer to California and back - blew out two wheel bearing because I didn't have "load levelers." Be very careful about towing. At that time hitches weren't that expensive, but the damage I did to my car was...
Thai restaurants? We've got a-plenty. I'm not sure about St. Paul, but Chiang Mai Thai in Minneapolis is fantastic. Ketsana's in Richfield is great, too (and run by actual Thai people, unlike Chiang Mai Thai). You will not be lacking for ethnic food in the Cities.
Lots of Thai options, all over the Twin Cities. Here's some close to you.
Ruam Mit Thai Cafe, downtown, at 473 St. Peter St.
Taste of Thailand,1671 Selby Ave (on Selby just west of Snelling)-looks like a dive, has good menu with excellent pad Thai and spring rolls. No green curries, though. Only red. Don't go if you're in a hurry--service is often slow. But, they do takeout!
Krua Thailand,432 W. University Ave, one of the best of the many options on University Avenue. I've gone there often, in spite of having had a couple of not-so-hot times. Anything with fish is usually excellent, and their curries are good too. Haven't had as good luck with the papaya salad (if you like that, I'll point you to an Oriental market on the East side that my Hmong friends tell me makes the best)
True Thai, 2627 East Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis just over the river a bit is supposed to be fantastic. (I can't believe I've not eaten there yet...will fix that asap)
I second Tipper's suggestions above too. Ketsana's has good green curry (albiet on the sweet side) and Tom Yum and...oh crap..some other soup whose name I can't recall at the moment. And it's easy to get to, on Lyndale just off highway 62 at 76th.
What are your thoughts on Vietnamese? Chinese? (dim sum??)
Taste of Thailand is hands down my favorite Thai food in St. Paul, although service can be lacking at times. As others have said, great Vietnamese food in the Twin Cities. Being a Minneapolis girl, I used to frequent the restaurants (delis) on Nicollet Avenue.
