In a convergence of the threads of my life, the Minneapolis Star Tribune mentions crocuses coming up in New Jersey. I just saw a crocus today in our yard. Too weird.

And here is something that I thought was just extremely funny To The Large Spider

As far as knitting goes - today was a butt day. Me, on my butt, making flight arrangements, paying bills, shipping books, making CAR rental and hotel reservations, returning emails from yarn shops - a very busy day and I moved 5 feet all day. Tomorrow will be a WALKING day, that's for sure.

Bittersweet Meet
Last night I met with my local yarn group - the Yarn Pirates (yarrr!)

So long ago - 5 years? - I started teaching some knitting classes out of a storefront in South Orange and one of my students was Athena. Athena introduced me to the concept of blogging, the idea of the Meetup, and is the driving force behind our semi-monthly meetings. Early in our knitting-group-dom, when we had no name, I arranged for a knitting retreat at Ocean Grove. We had a good time - it was a learning experience for all (and the G&T's on the beach in the moonlight were a wonderful study aid...)

At one point we were sitting around being silly when one of our number mentioned that her husband was Irish. So we all had to affect Irish accents.

We sounded insane - not Irish at all - but rather like... PIRATES! Yarrr! And thus we became, The Yarn Pirates. YO ho!

(Yes, those little men are spelling out Yo Ho... in a past life, when I had more time on my hands, I used to design fonts for fun. This is one of my semaphore fonts - I also did a Braille font - that's useful for web design ...)

I will miss my Pirate Crew SO much. Yar. Ceil, Janis, Harriet, Athena, Jen, Claudia (both!) and everyone else that I'm forgetting - what a wonderful bunch of quiet, rowdy, cheerful and thoughtful women. I wonder if we could take advantage of this lovely Spring weather and sneak off to the beach again before I leave...

I've been putting off my goodbyes, and now with a month to go - much of which time I'll be away - I really MUST start saying my farewells. This is the hard part. C'mon, Minnesota - group hug! Make me feel the love and fill the empty Jersey-shaped hole in my heart...

Hi, I feel the need to introduce myself. I am from Minneapolis, a crocheter, and just recently a knitter. I stumbled upon your website a couple of months ago (I read Drew's too) and have been hooked (no pun intended) since. I mentioned that I have recently begun knitting, and you have been a big inspiration to that. I know only two people who knit - I obviously haven't branched out - and the same amount who crochet.

Anyhow, I'm in Minneapolis and am excited to hear that we are getting another knitter. I might never meet you, but it's fun to know that I sort of know a nother knitter that will be here.

I hope it's not weird that I have read your blog for so long without really knowing you. I've wanted to say "hi" for a while but didn't quite know how to. But since you called for a MN group hug I had to join in :)

A Braille font, huh? Now if pixels were only 3-dimensional...

Annie - you always make me laugh (or cry).

Love ya! - Carol in Oregon

In a surprise twist for me, I'm about to move to Minnesota too! I'll happily join in that big 'ol group hug to welcome you. (Even though I'm not there yet)
Yay!

Personally I can't wait for you to make your move. I think you'll find the local knitting community darn active & a whole heck of a lot of fun. Between that & the chance that I'll be a student for life you should be all set ;)

The best thing about being a knitter and moving is.....meeting new knitters (and finding new yarn shops). My own personal move catapulted me from sometime knitter to out and out fanatic, because the best place to find new friends was via yarn shops and knitting groups. Here's to a great move!

I was flipping through a copy of "Men Who Knit and the Dogs who Love Them" the other day, and I must say, that you've done a great job. I wouldn't mind making many of the sweaters for myself.

This post made me sad for you... good luck with all the arrangements involved with the move. I liked Corrie's comment, at least new yarn shops is a bright side.

While I saw a T-shirt at the Mall of America that said "Friends don't let friends live in Minnesota," I think it is a great place for raising children, shopping, enjoying the outdoors and knitting and I have only lived here for four years. I am a rabbi's wife and a knitter and I hope you will offer your wisdom locally in between your cross-country tours. We are looking forward to showing you the love.

Celie - Don't feel weird, I guess the whole blog thing is kind of weird, but I refuse to let my life be ruled by fears. I'd rather embrace the friends I've made on the internet and accept that now and then it may seem weird that I write about my life and knitting! Read on!

Nik - My work here is done! Glad you like it!

Rebecca - I'd love to know where your husband is Rabbi!

Caro - Maybe there's a newcomer's club in the TC for us to join?

Birdsong - Thanks for the sympathy - it's a hard place to be in, changing form one life to another. It's bittersweet, but it's our choice and we feel that it's a good one. Don't spend too much time feeling bad for us - we'll be dandy!

Here's a tip for enjoying your life in Minnesota - don't start following the local sports teams. Yes, the Gopher Hockey Team is a lone bright spot. But all the rest of them will break your heart, every time. Happily, we have our billion yarn stores to comfort ourselves.

Hi there and Welcome. I'm a lifelong Minnesotan and I hope you will love it here as much as I do. St. Paul is a big city and offers all that comes with it. Lots of diversity and culture. To be honest, there is some big city crime, but not as much as other large metro areas. Also, one of the best attractions in St. Paul is my late husband's sister Kathy's chocolate truffle company called "Just Truffles" (as seen on Oprah) (http://www.justtruffles.com/) and they are just fabulous. You must try one (many?). Tell her Tracy from Park Point in Duluth sent you.

I'm sure you'll love Minnesota. We have 10,000 lakes, dozens upon dozens of yarn stores, many state and regional parks, theaters, museums (including a science museum and a childrens' museum), zoos and fantastic restaurants. It is a great place for sports fans, too.

And, don't let winter scare you...it was 45 the other day and we haven't seen much snow...maybe two or three inches this season. We just like to talk about how bad the weather is to keep the state to ourselves. :)
