Needles & Pins

So today I went off to my doctor, who is also an acupuncturist, and had myself pinned. I figure if it has to do with needles, it can't be all bad! I wanted to try this for my asthma - I'd heard it could improve things, and with the stress lately my COPD's been getting the better of me.

Guess what, I felt a difference right away! The difference subsided a bit after 30 minutes, but it's about 4 hours since the treatment and I definitely feel that I'm breathing easier.

This is even more notable because it's rainy and humid - which is usually the kiss of death for my breathing - but it's not so bad today, not after getting stuck!

I Have a Fan Because of the humidity - and just for comfort - we decided to put in a ceiling fan.

Off to Menards, we bypassed the sale fan and sprung for a nicer one (well, it's going into our prize ceiling, where it would really show if we tried to cheap out...)

It wasn't easy getting it up, but it was relatively simple, and I learned a few things about octagonal electrical boxes & spackle along the way. (I also learned that it's bad for an exposed wire to touch the aforementioned electrical box.) But now everything is fine, no more sparks, and the fan is spinning like a dervish.

Redo of Redo Plans
I had a brainstorm the other day.

One of the problems in our kitchen redo has to do with the foundation (or lack thereof) under part of our kitchen (the part that used to be a porch, but has been incorporated into the kitchen.) Unless we engage in some very pricey building calesthetics to create a foundation, the renovation as planned probably wouldn't be to code for any plumbing.

So - when faced with this - I figured, "Why not just turn the plan around so that the addition doesn't hold any plumbing?"

By moving the bathroom over to what is now the NW corner of the kitchen, walling that off and widening the doorway into the kitchen, I think we have a very functional space. I also think we can save some $$ by not altering or adding windows to existing walls, and keeping the new windows limited to the new walls.
So here's our new projected layout. Time marches on. We've seen 4 general contractors so far, and we'll see another on Friday, then we'll get bids and begin the decision making process!

My own personal bugaboo, responsible for a FOUL mood over the past 3 days, has been this *&@()#! bra pattern that I'm trying to work out. Oy.

But I think I may have it licked.

It's not making it up that's so hard - it's finding the natural and elegant connections between dart placement and cup sizes that will make a universal pattern possible. Because I can't just DO anything easily.

Hi, Annie! I've been reading about your adventures settling into your new house and enjoying it very much. You have great ideas and taste, it's an inspiration. I do have a question, though. Have you considered putting the washer and dryer upstairs with the bedrooms (and the source of most dirty fabrics)? Then your kitchen could have a bathroom and a pantry or a bathroom/shower.

I continue to enjoy your posts and check regularly. Despite the negatives of Gerry's illness, there is a lot of positivity that comes through.
All the best to you all.

sticking my nose where it clearly doesn't belong - but would hate for you to put up with something that drove me insane for years. Not having a counter between the stove & fridge and having all of the stove spatter stuck on the side of the fridge. It made me not want too cook & I felt pinned in by the fridge.

If you do consider the washer/dryer upstairs like Auntiemichal suggested, they DO sell liners for such a thing. In the case of washer breakdown/overflow etc. the liner will hold all the water thus preventing the catastrophe of ruined walls and ceilings on the floor below.

Great idea about moving the plumbing over.

I'm so happy to read that acupuncture helped your asthma! That is wonderful to hear! Back in the day (before my disability) I was a respiratory therapist and saw exactly what asthma can do to a person, so it's great to find something that helps that isn't drug related!
Can't WAIT for the swimsuit! I'm guessing that's what you are having bra problems with...or, perhaps you are writing a bra pattern for us...that would be FANTASTIC!

It's me again, butting in. LOL Looking at the kitchen plan with Cursing Mama's sensible comment in mind, I noticed that the fridge is in the middle of the span of counter. Are you sure you want to have it poking out like that?

Perhaps the fridge can go where the oven (wall ovens? oven/microwave stack?) is, and the oven can go where the new door is, and the door stays in its current spot.

Perhaps the oven stack could go diagonally in the top-right corner of the floor plan?

Or just swap the fridge and oven (the oven shouldn't poke out).

I'll stop now. VBG

I have to agree with auntiemichal about the fridge being next to the stove, plus I wonder if it won't drive you crazy to have the door swinging in that direction, so you're putting stuff on the counter so far from the sink. Would it make sense to move the fridge where the stove is, the sink where the stove is, and the stove where the fridge is in your plan? Not sure if you're trying to minimize moving plumbing. Also, I really liked auntiemichal's idea of moving the washer/dryer upstairs to make room for a shower. Now that my dad is getting to the point where he's almost wheelchair bound, I'm really glad his house has a first floor bath with shower.

Hey -- been lurking for some time (see you this summer in MI). I am a regular acupuncture person, and it's helped my allergies, tendonitis AND stress issues. You don't have to know how it works to continue. Just consider that it works and enjoy the feeling better part.
