NWA Ate My Luggage

I have lost my luggage. Damn.

It was a rough day - delayed flight; the mad dash through the Detroit airport to make my flight (with - literally - 1 minute to spare...) and then my luggage is lost. LOST! Dang. But worse things can happen.

I imagine it's on some desert island somewhere whacking at papayas and coconuts with a machete, engaging in steamy love scenes and finding odd numeric messages. A girl can dream, huh?

Hair Where?
So here's the much requested photo of the head. Yes, I photoshopped it - I didn't really make myself look any better, just a little less - tired.

Ain't I a cutie? I'm anxious for Beth at Lorna's Laces to give me some tips on how to live with the dyke-cut. Please don't be offended, I say it with love.

It's a great cut - for Gomer Pyle. Ask your mom. I look so old and sad in this picture.

I called the salon to see about some kind of fix. They were really nice, the woman I spoke with (the owner of the salon) is going to have me come by on Tuesday and we may try dyeing it blonde. Eh. What do I have to lose? It could be fun. It could be a wretched mistake. At this point, it's all kind of an adventure, and it amuses the children.

This is testing my much-touted refain of, "Life isn't about not making mistakes, it's about dealing with them gracefully..." So let's see how graceful I really CAN be about this.

So far I've run into a few friends, checked into my room (yes, it's another expensive hotel so I have to PAY for internet.) I still can't figure that out, unless they know that most folks who stay here are on expense accounts so they'll pony up to keep in touch with the office. What a scam.

In my luggage - which, according to the Northwest Airline site is in transit (it's actually kind of cool that you can track your luggage like a UPS package) are all of my Romantic Hand Knit samples, my class handouts, my clothes, my medicine, my makeup (because the terrorists hate our flawless skin I have to pack my concealer) and I'm worried I won't get it in time for my 8:00 am class tomorrow.

Luggage Update
It's 10:00pm now and still no luggage. I have to hit the hay or I won't be able to teach at 8:00

I just spent $19 in the hotel gift shop for toothpaste, a toothbrush, deoderant and Qtips. I'm hand washing my clothes so I look at least remotely okay tomorrow - I'm very glad now I chose NOT to travel in baggy pants and an old T shirt.

According to the NWA website I can request a
complimentary kit with a comb, deodorant, razor, shaving cream, toothbrush, and toothpaste from the Luggage Service office. Unfortunately, the Luggage Service Office is at the airport, I'm here in downtown Columbus, and I doubt that they'd rush to get me some toothpaste. Heaven knows what I'm going to do about my meds - breathing? That's for the birds!

Fighteningly, though, they have ONE suitcase listed as being FOUND, the other is still lost. The one that's FOUND is the one with the Romantic Hand Knits stuff - thank heaven. If I have to choose a suitcase to lose, it would be the one with my clothes. Clothes I can replace, the Romantic Hand Knit stuff I don't think I'd have the heart to re-do! Sophie's Choice with luggage.

Cell Angst
Power is a problem this weekend as I forgot my cell phone charger. Dang. Anyone here at TNNA have a motorola phone charger I could borrow? They have a buttload of chargers down at the front desk, left behind by travelers. Alas, none of them fit my little pink razor.

Room with a View
Ah, the lovely roof of the Convention Center. It's going to be hard to sleep, I just want to stay up all night gazing at the flatness.

Breaking Luggage News
10:21 - a phone call alerting me to the fact that my LUGGAGE HAS ARRIVED just came through. Oh, the anticipation! What will it be?? One suitcase? Both? Do I have $5 for a tip? Is that enough? Can I get that $19 back for the most expensive toothpaste in Columbus?

Luggage Update
10:40 - Both bags arrived, the bell-guy (are they called that anymore?) seemed happy with $5 and told me they would have GIVEN me toothpaste at the front desk. I was afraid to ask - I figured it would be $25. To celebrate I ordered room service for breakfast - oatmeal and a fruit smoothie. Life will be good. I may even get my act together to take a swim tomorrow!

Yeeeah! Let's hear it for breathing meds (and Annie, please don't pack them again, ok?-- do carry on for the meds). Okay, with the hair, I have a few suggestions. 1-Gel it up some. 2-if you can stand it or think it'll work, get some of those cute little hair clips that are butterflies or flowers or something. One of my co-workers does that and it's cute. I'd look like I was trying to be 8 years old, but hey, it's an idea. Hope TNNA goes well for you!

It is funny/sad/pathetic that NWA lost your luggage the day they came out of bankrupcy.

Love the hair. You look like some of the most wonderful, loving, female professors that I admire and respect.

Get some expensive sunglasses and treat yourself to a really nice tube of lipstick. You'll be amazed.

I wouldn't suggest blonde--maybe a reddish brown with some lighter highlights. Relax all those muscles (face and body), remember how freeing it is. You'll look gorgeous and we'll all envy you because it's such a carefree, effortless and erudite look.

Fabulous accessories, darling. Earrings, scarves, sunglasses. If you dye, just do the tips. Remember: It grows out! :)

So glad your stuff showed up! As for the hairÉ how about some nice chunky colour blocking? I wouldn't go all blond just get some highlights 'n lowlights in there for dimension, a great pair of sunglasses (good for your eyes and it'll hide the tired) and like somebody else said, some great lipstick and you're all set.

hey there - this is my first time by your blog - I'm in Alaska (since 1978) but was born and raised in Columbus - I still have some connections there. If you need something, please do let me know and I will see what I can come up with.

seriously!

Your hair is short. But on the up side, it highlights your very lovely eyebrows and eyes! In fact, I'd almost swap new haircuts with you for a lifetime of lovely eyebrows like yours!

I'd go for lots and lots of mascara and a great tinted lipgloss over some lipstick - it always makes me feel a million times better.

Hi there, I am a long time reader but this is my first time commenting. I just wanted to say how much I feel for you in your tough, *tough* situation. I know you are probably getting advice from more directions than you care to keep track of at the moment, but for what it's worth I wanted to drop Jerry Brunetti's name - he has developed a really interesting (and, it seems, effective) nutritional program for ppl with cancer.

And by the way, you look great with short hair - very striking!! But if you are finding it hard to adjust to, just remember the old adage about the difference between a good and a bad haircut being just four weeks!

Actually, the haircut is gorgeous in the back. Very nice line! For the front, maybe just a few streaks instead of fully blond? It isn't nearly as bad as you described it! And in two weeks it will already have grown a lot!

Glad your luggage arrived. It is such an "empty" feeling to wonder where all your personal belongings are.

Hair looks good! It just works for you. I think it brings out your blue eyes.

Not sure about the blond though? Why not try it?????

Put your nose in the air and go on, you have what it takes to wear this 'do. Scarves, headbands, earrings - you can do it all, although I love the lipstick and sunglasses option!

my heart has been pounding over the luggage. YAY that it's been recovered! Sorry about the personal effects..

as for the hair, i am not a fan of highlights (or streaks? is that what they're called?) but i think they would be a way to go other than one solid colour. i had a traumatic hair experience in jr high (of course) and my hair ended up about where yours will be in two weeks or so. My mum then dyed it bleach blond and we didn't do anything when the roots came in. I was one miserable 7th grader! Now i cover it [that's the real reason] and rarely let anyone near it with scissors or anything else sharp.

I have had very short hair on and off since high school - I'm 42.
seriously, a little product to give the messy but manages look, earrings if you can and a little lipstick and you're set. I don't think I look dyke-like in the least.
I do love my short hair. My sister just shaved her head. But she runs a couple of tatto parlors and is coverd in art so it's probably easier to get away with for her.
I hope you guys get some good news soon.

Annie,
I'm a longtime lurker, about your age, also a non-religious humanist who has had troubles, though not as hard as yours. I started reading your blog in appreciation of your creativity (that great knitted chair), but now I'm in awe of your fortitude. You don't look old, or masculine, or even tired --you look sad, and who wouldn't be?
Sending good wishes your way, now and always,
Liz

I'm so glad to hear that you have a happy ending to your lost-luggage story! More than 10 years ago, American Airlines lost one of my suitcases--permanently. Not only did it have all my best business clothes in it, but it also had a hand-knit Aran sweater that my mother had spent a year making for me. I'd only just received it two weeks before. Now THAT was a tragic loss! There was a small silver lining, though--I didn't have the heart to tell my mom what had happened, so...

I tracked down the pattern.
I tracked down the yarn.
I taught myself how to read patterns and knit cables (having only ever knit stockinette before).
And I reknit that sweater!

And the funny thing was--once I had the nerve to tell my mom--years later--she'd forgotten all about ever having knit that sweater!!

Hope you have a great day at TNNA!!

Annie, your hair looks great! Please don't go blonde--you're a redhead! And guess what? Hair grows. You don't like it now. Well, in about a month it might be where you want it to be and then it'll be time for another haircut.

The hair looks fine. If you are really worried, then some accessories. And if you can get it L'Oreal Telescopic mascara is fabulous! (I am a mascara junkie) You will be amazed at the difference some mascara can make. Trust me.

See, now I'm hyperventilating because my pup is traveling on NWA on Sunday to the national specialty show. Worse than losing a year's worth of work, now I'm worried they'll lose my dog.

Glad your luggage found you, though

Don't dye the hair. Earrings, relaxed face and you are fine.
Or a hat or headscarf and pretend you are frum.
On the up side, if you wanted to join the Navy, that's a legal hair cut!

With a bad haircut, always remember: (1) it will grow out, and (2) other people are much more concerned with how THEY look than how YOU look.

I kept my hair very short while in the Navy and very often these days too. I hate getting used to a new hairdresser because I've had your haircut more than once!

It's time for bigger earrings and more make up. Accessories are fun too. And if asked out by anyone, smile sweetly and tell him or her you are already in a relationship.

part of dealing with hair is also how to style it. have you considered maybe combing the bangs differently (not straight up) or wearing it with a knit headscarf? or maybe going blonde (or even red?)

and also i second the earrings and the makeup -- some lip gloss and dark eyeliner, maybe?

you can totally rock this look, just a matter of figuring out how. let us know how it goes hairwise!

Annie, my husband travels every week for his job. I typed him out a check list to use when he leaves home and for when he comes home. Put everything on it - meds, cell phone and charger, boarding pass, etc. One page of a Word Document helps more that you think.

Don't go blonde - I was pleasantly surprised how good your whole head shot looked.

Sending good thoughts your way,
Sheri

Hi Annie, I'm a flight attendant so will tell you what to do about the phone charger. Call the hotel operator and ask them to send up one from the lost and found since you left it in the lobby (remember?). They have a zillion cell phone chargers and laptop power cords left behind by travelers who never call to claim them in a box in their lost and found room. Then leave it in your suitcase.

Love you Annie! The short hair might be a disaster (I liked the yarn headband in the Project Runway photo) but I would kill for red hair like yours. Maybe a scarf? And something good from the MAC counter to cheer you up in the meantime? If one of your "help" options is a good "Mother's Helper" teenaged summer babysitter, I know a few and will email you.

Please don't dye that beautiful hair blonde. Just cut the top shorter to match the sides. If you go blonde with all that hair on top you'll look like a crazy person.

Annie,

As my husband says whenever I cut my hair--'it'll grow out' and it does.

Crazy Aunt Purl posted about Revlon ColorStay lipstick--LOVE it and have bought 4 of them. It really does stay on forever and is about $10.

I wish I had the nerve to cut my hair as short as yours--it must be wonderful not to spend an hour having to fuss and STILL not get it right! I bet you can just wash, gel and go!

Barbara from Maplewood here -- last saw you in Ian's office just before you flew the coop -- wanted to let you know I'm still reading and now holding you and your family in my daily thoughts.

I got a similar haircut from Alma at Chelsea Set! Thinking I was doomed - but you wouldn't believe the compliments I've been getting. Now I'm thinking its getting too long!!

Keep breathing, and know your friends from the right coast are still with you!

I agree with the thoughts on streaks in the hair vs. solid dye job - how about blue or green? Green looks wicked good on a redhead. And think how amusing THAT would be to the kids?

And my #1 recommendation for hair in the Twin Cities - Olive, A Salon
http://www.olivesalon.com/
Jonica cuts my middle-aged hair in a way that manages to look professional yet young and fresh. And they do fabulous color.

I wish I could be in Columbus with you - where we lived before moving to the Twin Cities 10 years ago.

I am being completely honest when I say I think your hair looks really good. The short style suits you and brings out your eyes and lips. I say don't go too light: it will age you more, I think. Rather, work on what bothers you about it: looking old and sad? Some under-eye makeup might be helpful.

I really, really like the cut and style: I bet in a month's time it'll be a convenient and chic look that you love!

As long as the battery in my phone isn't totally depleted, I can charge my Razr phone with my computer, using the USB cable that I use to upload photos from my digital camera. I almost always have a cable like this with me on trips anywhere.

(I realize this is likely not an issue for you anymore, but as someone who has NO IDEA where her charger is ever, it has helped me immensely.)
