THANK YOU

Thanks so much for all of your very kind notes, comments and bits of advice. Sometimes advice is overwhelming (you know when you've sent too much) but often it's on target.

I'm happy to get advice - it's easier for me to read it in a post on the blog than in an email - if an email gets too wordy I sort of blank out on it. That's simply exhaustion, and perhaps a bit of lack of focus.

I'll try to answer all of your very kind emails, but I may not be able to. Please know that they're read and appreciated! One note: It's probably best to steer clear of overt religious messages when you write to me, you may not like the response. I'm respectful of religion, and just as respectful of secular, humanist, atheist compassion - they both have a place in my world, but personally I lean toward the latter.

And, as in knitting, I refuse to believe that there is only one way to peace and inner harmony. Heaven is within us.

Lack of Judgement
The picture says it all. I look like a - well - lets just say that folks are going to be checking the size of my hands. Fabulous. Let's just say it was a breakdown of communication, and I liked the stylist a lot - I just didn't make myself clear. Another translator is needed.

The sides and back are even - well - more drastic. That's what Gerry called it, drastic.

"It's a - drastic - haircut, hon. But it IS May."

The implication being that by the time September rolls around my summer haircut may be just long enough for customs to allow me into France.

And that's why I love him - honest, yet tactful. Max even told me I looked good (but revised that to "not bad" when I told him to be honest.)

I've heard that BOTH weeks of the France trip is sold out. However, Gerry's tentatively scheduled for his transplant in Sept, so that will be happening later in the month.

Do you like how Gerry's health is planned around my teaching schedule? Just this once.

Now I'm going to go try to make peace with my hair. I'm knitting a headband and have prepared some Alchemy silk to wear around my head at TNNA.

I'll keep a tally tomorrow as I fly to Columbus how many folks address me as, "Sir..."

This was a really cute blog entry. I like it. Now I am one of your new readers so everything is still a bit confusing to me. In some ways I know how you feel and I agree with you about the whole knitting thing. (I knit too!) I know you are older than me (not in a bad way) but don't worry if people call you Sir, yet I'm sure your not. Anyways I hope you come look at my blog. I havent had many people look at it. Actually no one has left any comments which is kind of getting to me. Anyways I will stop there so this isn't to wordy. I hate wordy e-mails too.

i have to admit i was in shock when i read the previous post. somewhere in the back of my brain, i could only say NO! i will say i'm rooting my brains out for that 10%.

as for the haircut, it could be worse. it could be a real mohawk, and not a fauxhawk (smack me later, loL)

You know you've donned your battle armour when you get a SHORT haircut. It's sort of a shrugging off stuff that's going to weigh you down i the tasks that you've got before you. It's as though you need to travel lightly becuase you'll be carrying heavy loads. I did this when I was doing a cross-continent move without any firm prospect of being able to live with my partner in the next year.

My sympathies with the help thingy. It IS hard because relationship boundaries all shift and it's another mental negotiation you don't need when you're already anxious. Hugs.

My thoughts are with you all. I hope you'll be able to enjoy the teaching and the conference - one needs the normality of work and a bit of a break when confronted with a bloody awful, unavoidable situation.

I'll raise a glass to you both at the S'n'B tonight!

I think that people nowadays are more comfortable and familiar with women who have short (yes, even boy-short) hair than you may think. ;) I think it looks nice and artisty, like "PSHAW! Hair! Who needs hair?! I have my ART!"

Perfect for a designer. ;)

if they get too uppity about the short hair...you've always got your knitting needls. I'm just say'n...it ain't never bad to be well armed.

I'm glad to see several people recommended the lawyer. Really, it could make all the difference, and that's one battle you don't need to waste your strength on.

I clipped my hair with nothin' but a pair of clippers for years. I love super short hair on women :) I bet you look great Annie! It's hard to tell from that photo though as all I can really see are your eyes. The posters above are right: stressful time ahead? Lack of hair is awesome. No worries! Just wash n' go.

I'm another one hoping for the 10% for you and Gerry. I've written before about my stepdad who was part of the 10%. I know it happens. I think it will happen to you too. They said he'd have 3 years and he had FIFTEEN! Don't cling too much to the numbers. Just make sure you tell each other you love each other every day.

Much love to you and Gerry and the kids.

N.

Thanks everyone, if I get brave I'll actually post a photo of the REST of the hair. Then you'll scream.

The Husband calls that kind of haircut a "low drag, low maintenance" cut. Think of the extra time you'll have each day since you won't have to "do" your hair. At least the stylist didn't misinterpret your directions into "make me look like Britney Spears"! Thoughts and prayers...

The good news? You wont have to worry about your hair on top of everything else.
Right before my wedding I decided to get a hair cut ad as with you miscommunication was in force. I went from mid shoulder length to shorter then my then fiance's. It grew out and was cute under the veil.

Hi Annie,
I've had boy short hair for over 20 years now. Maybe short hair will grow on you. It's SO much lighter than a head full, In the summer, my head doesn't feel as shot and steamy as it used to, and as I have to wash it every day, I don't have to spend 20 minutes blowing it dry. I spend 0 minutes blowing it dry!

As Rodgerm says, Who needs hair! A woman's femininity is not defined by the length of her hair any longer - thank goodness!

As for your hubby's health and all you all are going through now, you have my heartfelt wishes for his speedy and total recovery. Fight the numbers, ignore the numbers, they don't allow for the variable of willpower.

Annie, I just want you to know I'm thinking about you and Gerry and Max and Hannah - "good wishes" doesn't even cover half of it. Luck, peace, joy - as much as you can possibly squeeze in.

I think short hair is great- and yours is a beautiful red! Hears a laugh for you - I had the winter growth of my hair cut short and the stylist did a super job. I went home to cook dinner - we have stove burners that just never self light the way they should- and got out the butane fire lighter I've used a jillion times- It blew up in my face! Red scorched face, no eye brows (very funny to see) and my new hairdo looked like a cartoon character (the one who held the dynamite) with charcoaled sticky straight up friz for hair. Can you say "shorter hair cut"! Thank heavens hair grows back.

As a short hair veteran (got it cut short to GO to France last year), I recommend a touch of lipstick and some killer dangly earrings and you're out the door! As you said, heaven is inside you--BE the heavenly, beautiful woman we all know you are.

My heart aches for you and your family. You are one of the strongest women I've ever met so I know you will be ok and your love for Jerry and the kids will get everyone through the worst of this. My bet is on the 10% odds too.
Re: short hair_
I went from waist length to above my ears this past winter. Shocking at first but now I kinda like it! I'm just amazd at how heavy my head feels with no hair.
Sending love and good healing vibes from the coast.

Sending good thoughts to you and your family. I know Gerry will be one of the 10%! My grandmother has been told at least 10 times over the last 40 years that she will die within a few months. She just doesn't accept that reality and she's still her. You get the added benefit of knitters looking out for ya, that's powerful mojo!

Remember short messy hair is in right now, work it!

I had a shaved head when I went to France in 1999- they let me in then, I'm sure your hair cut will pass muster come September. Then again, I have a mohawk so what do I know ;)

At the post office today, the clerk ended the transation with "thank you, senior." (How do you put a tilde over the n?) I'm rather buxom and was wearing my long hair down for once, so it was a little confusing...

Not knowing that it wasn't a concious choice, I just thought the haircut made you that much more of a bad-ass, fiber rock-star in my mind.
