Making Peace With My Hair

So I returned to the salon for a "fix" and we decided to wait on a color.

When I walked in I was a lot more upset than I realized - I also figured out rather quickly that I just wanted
someone to say, "I'm sorry about your hair!"

Once I made that clear - sometimes asking is the best way - everything was cool and they
were very sorry about my hair. We were all sorry. And I found the picture that I'd shown the original stylist (princess Di on the cover of Bazaar, with short hair at the sides, long on top - a sort of Brideshead Revisited public school boy cut) so I KNOW I wasn't insane.

I'm more than willing to take a certain amount of responsibility for the original haircut. I'm thinking of it more as a breakdown in communication than a '
They tied me down and force a bad haircut on me!' episode. I figure that's one way I can grow from this experience. Hopefully my hair will grow, too.

I said Princess Di - she heard me say Princess Dyke... Once again, said with love...

So I had a different stylist this time, and I really wasn't expecting much. But she was able to 'texturize' my hair, shorten the top a bit so it wasn't quite so Sargent Carter

And she was able to "round out" my head. I have a square head.

I feel like it's a whole new haircut, and I'm really much more at peace with the hair. I can actually LOOK at myself in the mirror without bursting into tears (and isn't that what we ALL want?)

I'm still recovering from TNNA - what a body blow that was!

I swear, I wish it were spread out over a week. But even THAT wouldn't be enough time. I saw so much, ran into so many folks, and yet I MISSED so much (and stood up a few folks I didn't mean to - I'm sorry!)

And I keep getting emails with allusions to things I said or did while - ahem - impaired. I have NO memory of any of it (that's my story, and I'm sticking to it...)

SCHOOL
Today was FIELD day at Max's school, so I volunteered at the Oversized Clothing Relay.
It was a friggin' HOOT! I think I got the best assignment of the day (I kept yelling at the 3rd graders as they ran by in gigantic pants and shirts, "WHO ARE YOU WEARING??")

Well, I know I enjoyed myself!

Tonight - if it doesn't rain - Max has baseball again. Woo! And Hannah? She's been getting phone calls like mad - I guess she's making friends... Woo Woo!!

The great thing about hair...it grows. Every hour it grows the length of a mitochondria. That should cheer you up.

I'm still traumatized by a bad haircut in seventh grade (and I'm 33 now . . .). Same thing--new stylist who just did what she wanted, and apparently that was to do a mannish buzz cut. The kids in my class the next day thought I was a new student.

The new stylist really helped, though. That does look more rounded out and pretty. I'd bet you really carry it off, too. :)

Your hair looks good now--short, but shapely. Looks like it will grow out nicely, too.

when this short, it's all about the product, baby. Let me know if you need recommendations. Quite often, women go that short and decide to keep it. you will especially like it when it is hot this summer!

I used to do a lot of bursting into tears after haircuts, and putting my head in a basin of water, but 30 years ago I found a wonderful cutter and since then I've followed him everywhwere. When I lived in London I travelled 400 miles to see him - my family thought I was coming home to see them - and now I do an hour-long train journey because he's moved out of town. It's amazing, being able to look forward to having a haircut. I'm glad you're happier with yours now.

The hair will grow. It just takes much longer than we ever want it to!

I'm so glad that you had a good time at Max's Field Day. A good day, with a good laugh goes a LONG way. Thank goodness everyone is settling into your new town.

Do you get a break now?

Take care of you and yours!

Yes, your hair will grow...and in the meantime, your new cut shows off your gorgeous eyes! I did the uber short hair cut several years ago so I feel your pain.

On another topic. I enjoyed looking at the pictures from your new book, Romantic Hand Knits. I'd love to go ahead and order a copy, but I can't find any information about the sizes these patterns are written to fit. Please let us know ... Anne

It was 1965, her name was Thelma, her cat fell off her 2nd story porch a 1/2 hour before my sister and I arrived for a Friday evening haircut....on Monday we cried in the coat closet at school because our class mates made fun of the twins with the butch haircuts -- oh, excuse me "Pixie" haircuts. Some haircuts you just never forget!

Annie, that's the same haircut I have, but I get mine with a Flowbee and the Electrolux. It looks great on you!

You can stick to your story about being impaired, but I saw your bill at the Tip Top and there was nothin' on it but Iced Tea--so the silliness was all you babe, and I like it that way.

Annie--

I just found your blog tonight and am reading back through a few entries. This was my first TNNA ever and I was only there for Saturday. I managed to see it all. (So I tell myself. I took no classes and all but 2 of my contacts with yarn companies and publishers were 5 minutes affairs.) I have to say, though, that I rounded that back corner just as you were doing your book signing and I nearly fell over dead with the shock of seeing you there in person. I hopped in line only to find out I needed a ticket. So I made pleading motions to the woman next to you who told me it would be ok. Only to then realize that I had my meeting with Kim Werker in 3 minutes. The good angel engaged in serious combat with the bad angel. Be responsible and meet with Kim, or stay and get the chance to babel like an idiot in front of Annie Modesitt. Kim/Annie. Responsible choice/OMGITSANNIEMODESITT choice. Editor/Idol. I'm sure the woman in front of me thought I was having a seizure, because the struggle took on a bit of a physical quality to it toward the end. I finally decided I'd better make my appointment and left, cursing my luck. Just as we were wrapping up our meeting-over-coffee in the little lobby cafe, you were headed out the building and I had a "D'OH! D'OH! D'OH!" moment then, too. Kim was very understanding. Sign of a good editor, I think. She knows who the rock stars are.
So here I am babeling like an idiot on your blog instead! I finally got my chance!
