Bliss

Ignorance = Bliss. And few are as ignorant as I!

Don't worry about me folks, I [try to] ignore what doesn't move me toward a more peaceful, blissful state. I don't always succeed, but with the help of my faithful (and kind) blog readers, I have an easier time than I might. Thank you!

Regret
I didn't mean to hurt you, Rumplestiltskin! I just realized that I didn't mention my teaching there AT ALL! Believe me, that has more to do with my internet access immediately following the shop than with the shop!

I adored my time there - but didn't really have a good chance to sit down and blog about it afterward, and it was lost in the shuffle of moving on to a new yarn shop!
My day class there - lace - was a hoot!

I was THRILLED to see Scott in the class, he knit the Zip Front Top (shown on sexy rasta man in Men Who Knit) and a really great guy. He also knit one version of the Wavy Lace Scarf in Romantic Hand Knits. Fab. This guy is hard core - in a knitterly way. Hey Scott!

I was fried, it's true, but if I'd had more sense I'd have asked him to have a beer after class. But I didn't, so I missed out on [yet another] opportunity to drink with a tatooed guy. Damn.

What's the use of being on the road if I can't drink with the bikers?

Instead I went out dining with Julie - an extraordinary student from France and all around wonderful person. We're plotting our duo mother-daughter trip to France (we have daughters the same age) and who knows - it just may happen!

The day class was packed, but the evening class wasn't so full. A shame. The folks there were exceptional, and it was a chance for me to really take time to work with individual students. But I realized after class was over that I really shine when I have an audience. I'm a hog for the spotlight - now you know...

So my time at Rumplestiltskin - which seemed to be an exceptionally well stocked shop of very encouraging folks - was fun and very nice. My only regret was that I didn't take time to visit the tea shop next to the yarn shop while I had the chance. I love tea!

TEA!
Right now I'm in a little bit of heaven. Class today for Knitting Workshop went beautifully (30 women, all cabling like a a a aaaabus-and-truck of Riders to the Sea) and then I was off on my own for a short stroll around Santa Rosa (lovely, lovely place) and a drink at a local restaurant while I wanted for my carry-out dinner. Almost room service. Room service with a Tanqueray & Tonic (with a splash of Rose's Lime)

Life is good.

Now I'm back at my room, in the comfy chair (love the square chair & ottoman - my favorite pieces of furniture in a hotel room!) I've finished my pasta and had a bit of my wine (a dessert wine masquerading as cool-aid - just the way I like it - I'm such a wine idiot!) so I'm ready for bed when the spirit moves me.

And
I'm having a cup of Lady Grey tea (I keep calling it "Lady Jane Grey" - not the most restful image for a cup of tea...) and watching What Not To Wear.

Okay - I do love
Tim Gunn's show (but what is VW doing there? She's just not doing it for me...) - but WNTW is my favorite "Change your LOOK!" show. Stacey London cracks me up - so there!

But best of all? After my two classes tomorrow - which will be exceptional and loads of fun - I catch a flight HOME! I'm looking forward to that, baby!

Dear Annie...wine and tea and creative lovely people...thank god you got a little kindness from the universe. The "people" (I don't actually know what species they are) who want to nag at you about typos and spelling mistakes just puzzle the hell out of me. Why do they read your blog in the first place? Not to connect with other humans, apparently, but to talk to themselves about how superior they are. Poor sad you-know-whats. I think they don't really believe you are real (my ex-husband is like that--all the rest of us are fictional to him). They are probably very surprised that it hurts you to be criticized about totally irrelevant details. But it does hurt, and I'm sorry that you have to deal with that pain, when you are giving so much insight and pleasure and joy to the real humans who treasure your very human blog. Don't regret that you feel the pain--it's who you are. But you're also strong enough to take it, and maybe help some of the mindless ones learn a little bit. Much love, Kate

Jealous, jealous, I'm so jealous!! I worked in Santa Rosa for 7 years (lived in Healdsburg) and I just loved that whole area. We were out there in August and I sometimes wish we never left (Conn. now). I'm glad for you that you'll be home soon. I'm looking forward to hearing how your family's doing.

I used to be a French teacher and I am in full agreement with the others whose comments applaud you for using your French. It's how we all began, for heaven's sake, and we all made plenty of boo-boos before we got in a position to point out anyone else's boo-boos. As for the rest of anonymous' remarks, they are a red flag to indicate to you that she isn't someone whom you would want to share a G&T with, so thanks for not wasting your time, huh? Delete. Yoink. Clueless.
And just in case anyone was speculating that maybe she'd had a bad day and that was why she was venting like that, she should take a lesson from you on how to handle a bad day. With grace, chŽrie, with grace. Comme notre Annie.

Annie, I loved your class in Sacramento, Rumpelstiltskin's. You are an extension of your blog, lot's of laughs and lots of fun non stop talking. I came home and picked up my lace project in progress, placed a safety line which I don't normally do, and proceeded to work using your hints on my lace. I made a few mistakes but have already memorized the pattern. This is a first for me! I have always been glued to the pattern. OH yeh, my pattern is the leaf and trellis one from Victorian Lace today. I know fairly simple but I have been glued to the chart. FREEDOM BABY! Thank you! I'm the one whose sister's husband broke his neck mountain bike riding in Downieville, CA and is paralyzed. I told her what you said about how this just sucks. She started crying and told me that was the first thing anyone has said to her that makes sense. Gerry and your family are always in our thoughts. Two families working through difficult times. Looking forward to videos from you Annie. Your always on my list of things to buy. Alison

I'm so glad you had such a good experience at Rumpelstiltskin's. I went there while visiting my mom once, and they were tremendously kind to a neophyte knitter who was substituting yarns. I love shops like that. And isn't Santa Rosa fun? I miss living in NorCal...

Fly home safely tomorrow!

I am really glad to hear that things are mellowing out for you - you need stress like a hole in the head! We drink a lot of tea at our house and my daughter recently asked me, "Mom what makes Lady Grey Tea so darn yummy?" I use it to make iced tea and it needs very little sweetener. Have a good trip back.

Gingersnaps with Tea... said...

You can't control what other people will do or say, all you can control is how you react. Enjoy the bliss.

Sounds like you've had another good road trip.

Why is it that Lady Grey is so much better than Earl Grey (& Irish Breakfast is so much better than English Breakfast). Gotta love a good tea shop--did they happen to have any gingersnaps?

Hugs.

BTW, Alison (above) said something about your teaching people not to need to watch their charts like children watching ice cream being served? Do you talk about that in any of your books? (Maybe the subject of one of your future videos?) I am DYING to cut the cord on charts, but seem to have a very serious block about memorizing them. It's sad, really... Maybe you're coming to SoCal soon to teach a lace class? (said hopefully)

I'd love a video on teaching knitting. I've just started teaching and it's hard work!

Anything you'd be willing to share on preparing for class, writing handouts, making up samples, hints on dealing with students, odd situations, etc.

I had no real idea what I was getting into when I took on my first class--people noticed that I'm a good knitter and ready to help others at knit night, the next thing I know I'm teaching a class! Not at all the same thing!

I hope Gerry's still doing well, keep on keeping on.

Katherine

Can't believe no one commented about What Not to Wear and Tim Gunn!

If you think Stacy's a crack-up, have you seen the original BBC version with Trinny and Susannah? I love that show so much. It completely changed how I dress.

And I LOVE Tim Gunn. I have the biggest f.h. crush on him EVER.

I wish I had known you were in Sacramento BEFORE the class. I learned to knit at that shop and the ladies there are GREAT. I have a new born so I haven't been by for a while and I missed the news! I would surely have gotten a sitter to pick your brain for the evening. I hope to catch you someday when you make it back by. You are wonderful and I love company while I knit. Beer sounds good too!
