I Love VA

... and NOT because I'm not in prison.

I love it because I love it. Period.

Perhaps it's a cultural memory (my "people" have lived here since the early 18th C - here and what eventually became West Virginia), perhaps it's the lovely colors, but most especially it's the warm, warm welcome from Needle Lady in Charlottesville (hi, Izzy!) and On The Lamb in Staunton! And, yes, I can't stop thinking of Steven Colbert's "Monkey On The Lam" segment everytime I say the name...

Joe is a doll, Angel is an angel, and the classes are full of interesting and engaged ladies! Last night in Charlottesville I had SUCH a good time - I felt so loved (and I was feeling a little fragile) so I'm grateful for the mental hug you all gave me!

I'm not on my computer - I'm on the Business Center computer here at the ol' Stonewall Jackson, so my time is limited. But I wanted to give a shoutout to say that I'm NOT in the pokey, I'm LOVING Virginia (as I always do!) and I've seldom been treated more lovingly by students or shop owners. Thank you so much for the exceptional kindness.

Someone needs to teach the guy at the garage in Staunton to knit, though. Joe?

Right now I'm off to bed with an extreme headache. It's a migrane type thing, I'm certain it's been brought on by a combination of eating a sausage biscuit from this morning (didn't have time to eat it before class) and some severe overhead lighting at a book signing this evening (overhead lights give me headaches - how odd, huh?)

Oh - btw - my computer is a Powerbook G4. I don't know the volts / amps required by my power supply. At this rate I'll just wait until I get home and buy a new one at the Apple store. Hannah will be thrilled to have another reason to go to the MOA!

My Powerbook G4 adapter recently fried also and I got a replacement one from Macally for about $30 instead of the Apple one for more than double. It works fine! I bought at a local computer store but it is widely available online.

We lived in Harrisonburg (and Blacksburg - hi to Gina) for several years and loved to visit the Staunton Farmer's Market. If you have a chance, try to get a visit in. It is charming and the stuff is really great. At the time there was much more quilting in the area than knitting, but that was around 1988.

There is a little switch in the computer which apparently tells it to accept power from the adapter.
Sometimes this breaks, rather than the adapter.
Good luck getting your mac back in order!
thanks for the time you put into your blog

I hope by the time you read this your migraine is just a vague memory. Take care.

Overhead lights can give me headaches, too. I've found that only natural light and rest help with that. Be gentle with yourself today. :)

I was going to say what Cori did. The store is on the first level between Macy's and the Caribou kiosk.

Annie,

The classes were wonderful and I am going to finish my sample mitered bag this week. Sorry that you had a headache from the rude parking guy and overhead lights! I hope that you feel much better soon.

I am glad that you enjoyed VA despite the headache and my mother, Danielle and I really loved the classes. I have really changed the way I knit and am holding my yarn in my left hand now and it works much better for me. I hope that you can use some of the jokes!

Again, thanks so much for the class and the help.

First off, the Apple power adaptors always spark at the plug end on poor outlets because they're ungrounded. The only time you need to worry is if you smell smoke or if it starts sparking on the end that plugs into your computer.

The official Apple power adaptors are really terrible. After a few years (or less) of travel, they start to short out (this means that they may actually CATCH ON FIRE) or just stop charging your laptop. I wouldn't recommend buying one. Unfortunately, depending on what model year you have, most of the third party power adaptors won't work or they turn out to be just as fragile as the official one.

If you cooincidentally have an "aluminum" Powerbook like I do, the kind that requires 65W (mine was from 2003, right after 10.3 was released, and it has two usb ports, one firewire port, and one firewire 800 port), the only third party adaptor that I'll recommend is the one I got from Megamacs.com for $30. It's unbranded, but it's really sturdy (I, too, travel often) and it works great. I've seen the same adaptors on eBay and a few other sites. Some stores carry them too, but obviously not the official Apple ones.

This is way too wordy, so this geek will just shut up now and go back to lurking. Good luck!

Oh man - how were you in my state and I didn't know??? Okay, four hours away but still... And I have been known to take a road trip to see you...

You'll just have to fall in love with VA all over again when you're here in March - and BTW - I volunteer for airport pickup duty!!!
